Day Trips from Wadi Musa and Petra
Travel advisory, October 2026: Jordan is affected by the wider regional conflict involving Iran that began in 2026. At the time of writing, the US State Department rates the whole country Level 3, “Reconsider Travel”, and Level 4, “Do Not Travel”, for the borders with Syria and Iraq and a few named areas. The UK FCDO advises against travel only within 3 km of the Syrian border and gives no warning for Petra, Wadi Musa or Wadi Rum. Petra and Wadi Musa are open, but flights can be disrupted and conditions can change at short notice. Read the US State Department advisory and the UK FCDO advice before you book and again before you fly.
Petra fills a day or two on its own, but the roads out of Wadi Musa lead to several worthwhile trips. Fees are in Jordanian dinars (JD), and distances are by road.
Little Petra and Beidha, a half day
Little Petra, also called Siq al-Barid, is about 8 km north of Wadi Musa. It is run separately from Petra and needs no Petra ticket. Its Painted Biclinium is the best-preserved painted Nabataean interior, with vine, bird and winged figure frescoes. A taxi from Wadi Musa costs about 10 JD. Beidha, a Pre-Pottery Neolithic B village, shares the car park. Both are short, flat visits.
Shobak Castle
Shobak, the Crusader castle founded in 1115 by Baldwin I of Jerusalem, is roughly 30 to 40 km north of Wadi Musa. The foreigner entry fee is 1 JD. Opening hours are about 8:00 am to between 4:00 and 5:00 pm, so allow a morning or an afternoon. Rock-cut stairs lead down to a spring cistern.
Dana Biosphere Reserve
Dana lies about 60 km north and is managed by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature. Daily entry is 10 JD for non-Jordanians, plus tax. Trails and accommodation are booked through rscn.org.jo , and a guide is usually part of the rate. Road conditions matter in winter, because heavy snow can block mountain roads around Petra.
Wadi Rum
Wadi Rum is about 107 km south, a drive of 1.5 to 2 hours each way. It is a separate protected area with its own entry fee of about 5 to 7 JD per person, which the Jordan Pass is reported to cover. Jeep tour prices vary, so agree the total before you set off. From Wadi Musa this is a long day, and an overnight camp is the better way to see it.
Aqaba and the Red Sea
Aqaba is about two hours south, roughly 128 km. It offers snorkelling and diving, which Wadi Musa lacks. After a single dive, wait at least 12 hours before driving up to Petra, and longer after repeat dives. Dive operator standards vary, so choose carefully. In July 2026 the US Embassy told Americans to avoid Aqaba airport and port, so read current advice before you go.
Trips that are too far
The Dead Sea and Mount Nebo are each about three hours from Wadi Musa one way. Karak is far from Petra for a day return. Treat them as stops on a longer route, not as day trips.
Getting around
The JETT bus links Amman and Petra, with the morning service leaving Amman at 6:30 or 7:00 am and the return leaving Petra at 5:00 pm. Fares are about 10 to 15 JD one way, and timetables change at weekends and in Ramadan. Check jett.com.jo . To compare guided options from town, search Viator day trips from Wadi Musa .
