Petra Guides, Tickets and Night Tours
Travel advisory, 31 October 2026. The wider 2026 regional conflict involving Iran affects Jordan. At the time of writing the US State Department rates the whole country Level 3, Reconsider Travel, and Level 4, Do Not Travel, for the Syria and Iraq borders and a few named areas. It has also named Ma’an city and parts of Ma’an Governorate separately. The UK FCDO advises against travel only within 3 km of the Syrian border and lists no warning for Petra or Wadi Rum. Petra and Wadi Musa are open and operating, though flights can be disrupted and conditions can change at short notice. Read the US State Department advisory and the UK FCDO advice before you book and again before you fly. The rest of this page is written for a normal visit.
Licensed guides at the Visitor Center
PDTRA licensed guides are hired at the Petra Visitor Center, and the official rates are per group, not per person. The Main Trail costs 50 JD, the Main Trail plus the High Place of Sacrifice costs 100 JD, and the Main Trail plus the Monastery costs 100 JD. The Jordan Tourism Board also lists a guided Al-Khubtha walk at 50 JD and a guided Little Petra visit at 50 JD. Fees are on visitpetra.jo .
Club cars to the Treasury
Electric club cars replaced the horse-drawn carriages in the Siq in 2021. The fare from the Visitor Center to the Treasury is 15 JD one way or 25 JD both ways, and they run daily from 07:00 to 15:30 with no advance booking. Very young children ride free. They help tired legs on the flat approach, but the Monastery is reached only by steps.
Petra by Night
Petra by Night runs Sunday to Thursday from 8:30 to 10:30 PM and costs 30 JD, with children under 10 free. It is not covered by the Jordan Pass or the daytime ticket, although you need a valid daytime Petra ticket or Pass to buy it. Tickets are sold in person on the day at the Petra by Night office at the Visitor Center. Weather cancels it, so confirm at the Visitor Center that day. See Petra by Night .
Back Door trail with a 4x4 transfer
Visitors who walk from the Little Petra side to the Monastery can use an official 4x4 transfer for about 5 JD per person one way. The ticket is checked at the Little Petra office, and you must hold a valid Petra ticket. The trail is unmarked in places, so a guide is wise.
Petra Museum and Wadi Rum jeeps
The air-conditioned Petra Museum stands beside the Visitor Center. It opened in 2019 with Japanese funding and JICA support, and it is included in the site entry fee. Check its hours when you arrive. Wadi Rum jeep tours are a separate trip into Aqaba Governorate, and you arrange the price with the operator.
Animal rides
Horses, donkeys, mules and camels work in the park, and welfare groups document overloading. Agree the total price before you climb on, or decline and walk. Never ride a donkey up the Monastery steps.
