Split Museums, Galleries and Klis Fortress
Split museums, galleries and the fortress at Klis
Split’s ticketed sights are concentrated in a few well-run museums, plus one hilltop fortress outside town. Prices below come from the museums’ own price lists unless marked as approximate.
Substructures of Diocletian’s Palace
The vaulted cellars under the palace are the best-preserved part of the Roman complex. Entry is €10 for adults, €8 reduced and €18 for a family. They open daily 08:30 to 20:00 with last entry 30 minutes before closing, and they close on 5 April. Prices rise 50 percent outside working hours and 100 percent on holidays. The central hall that links the Riva (Bronze Gate side) with the Peristyle is a free thoroughfare, so you can see part of the space without a ticket. The cellars were a throne-room location in Game of Thrones. The City Museum price list has the current figures.
Meštrović Gallery and Kaštilac
Sculptor Ivan Meštrović’s villa and the fortified Kaštilac at Crikvine share one ticket: €12 adult, €8 concession and €20 family. The gallery opens Tuesday to Sunday 08:00 to 18:00, with last entry 30 minutes before closing, and is closed on Mondays and public holidays. Kaštilac holds his 28-panel wooden Life of Christ cycle. The address is Šetalište Ivana Meštrovića 46, and Promet line 12 passes the gallery. The Meštrović Gallery price list is the official source.
Archaeological Museum and Salona
The Archaeological Museum at Zrinsko-Frankopanska 25 is the oldest museum institution in Croatia, founded in 1820. Tickets are €8 adult, €4 concession and €15 family. From 1 June to 30 September it opens Monday to Saturday 09:00 to 14:00 and 15:00 to 20:00. From 1 October to 31 May it opens Monday to Friday with the same split hours, and Saturday 09:00 to 14:00. It is closed on Sundays and holidays, and last entry is one hour before closing.
Salona is at Tusculum, Don Frane Bulića 91, in Solin. It has the same prices and opens daily 09:00 to 20:00 from June to September and 09:00 to 18:00 from October to May. A combined Salona and Split museum ticket costs €10 adult or €5 concession and stays valid for 7 days. See the Archaeological Museum visitor page before you go.
City Museum and Vidović Gallery
The City Museum costs €10, €8 or €18 and opens Tuesday to Sunday 09:00 to 20:00. The Emanuel Vidović Gallery costs €8, €6 or €14 and opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 20:00. The walkway above the north wall is €6, €4 or €10.
Klis Fortress
Klis sits on a mountain pass about 12 km northeast of Split, well away from Marjan. Secondary sources give about €12 for adults and about €4 for children up to 15, on a combined ticket that also covers the Interpretation Centre, the Stella Croatica agro park and the Olive Museum. Opening hours vary by source, so check before you go. Paths are uneven and some drops are unguarded. Promet Split line 22 serves Klis, at €2.00 with the app and €4.00 from the driver.
Savings with the SplitCard
The SplitCard is free for stays of 5 nights or more from April to October and 2 nights or more from November to March. It is valid for 72 hours and is issued at the tourist information offices at Peristil, Riva and Stobreč. It gives free entry to the Vidović Gallery, the Ethnographic Museum and the Natural History Museum, 50 percent off the Archaeological Museum, and 25 percent off the Substructures.
