Multi-Day Dubrovnik Trips: Islands and Kotor
Multi-Day Trips From Dubrovnik: A Short List
Dubrovnik works as a base, so most visitors stay here and head out on day trips. Overnight trips are fewer, and they need to be put together from separate pieces: a ferry, a bed and a return plan. No train helps, because Dubrovnik has no passenger railway.
Along the coast to Split
A seasonal catamaran links Dubrovnik with Split, stopping at Mljet, Korčula and Hvar. It runs roughly from April to October, takes about 4.5 to 6 hours and starts from about €25. Operators include Krilo and Kapetan Luka. Timetables change each season, so check the operator before planning a route around a sailing time.
Split is about 230 km from Dubrovnik. By car, allow 3.5 to 4 hours each way across the Pelješac Bridge. It deserves a night, not a rushed afternoon.
Islands as overnights
Mljet. The national park, saltwater lakes and a Benedictine monastery on an islet are a good reason to sleep over. The park fee is separate from the boat, so check np-mljet.hr .
Korčula. The catamaran stops here, which makes it a natural first night on the way north.
Lopud and Šipan. Both are in the Elaphiti group, reached by the Jadrolinija ferry from Gruž. Lopud is car-free. Look up Jadrolinija’s local lines for the sailing days.
Kotor as an overnight
Kotor in Montenegro is about two to three hours south. A passport is required, and the EU Entry/Exit System is adding wait times at Schengen borders, including crossings from Montenegro. Waits vary widely, so allow extra time on the way back. Official advice is on the UK government’s Croatia travel page . Some visitors prefer to compare Kotor tours than drive themselves.
Planning honestly
There is little in the way of a ready-made package that starts in Dubrovnik and strings several nights together. Treat any route as a loose plan: pick a ferry, hold the accommodation, and keep a spare day. Do not count on same-day connections between islands, and leave a buffer on the day you fly home, since a missed ferry cannot be fixed by taking a train.
Staying put instead
If the goal is more days, not more places, the city itself fills them. The 4-day itinerary covers the Walls, Lokrum and the Elaphiti islands without changing beds.
Verdict
For a first multi-day trip, take the catamaran to Mljet or Korčula for one night and return. Book the return sailing before you go.
