Croatia Attractions: Caves, Museums, Islands
Croatia’s paid attractions are spread across the coast and the capital, and most have seasonal hours. Prices below are in euros and come from official pages where one exists. Where a figure comes only from tour listings it is marked as approximate, so confirm it before you travel.
Diocletian’s Substructures, Split
The vaulted halls under the old palace mirror the emperor’s private rooms above them. Tickets cost €10, or €8 reduced, and the halls are open daily from 08:30 to 20:00, with the last entry 30 minutes before closing. They are closed on 5 April. You can enter from the Riva side through the Bronze Gate or by the stairs at the Peristyle. The Split tourist board lists the halls as a Game of Thrones filming location. The streets of the palace itself are free at all hours. See mgs.hr .
Museum of Broken Relationships, Zagreb
The museum is in Kulmer Palace at Sv. Ćirila i Metoda 2 in the Upper Town and displays personal objects donated with short anonymous stories. Adults pay €9, students and seniors €7, and children under 12 enter free. Opening is 09:00 to 22:00 from June to September and 09:00 to 21:00 from October to May. It closes on 24 and 25 December, 1 January, Easter and 1 November. See brokenships.com .
Zagreb funicular
The funicular is only 66 m long and costs €0.66 one way. It runs every 10 minutes from 06:30 to 22:00, including holidays, and Zagreb ZET tickets are valid on it. It takes you up to the Upper Town in a minute or two. The infozagreb.hr funicular page lists the current times.
Brijuni National Park
A park boat from Fažana crosses in about 15 minutes to Veliki Brijun, the only island open to visitors. The 9-hectare safari park there is home to Lanka the Indian elephant, zebras, zebu, llamas, peacocks, donkeys and ostriches, and a sea-turtle rescue centre sits beside it. Tour and train packages are sold online at shop.np-brijuni.hr or at the park office at Brionska 10 in Fažana. Prices vary by season and age band, so check before you book.
Blue Cave, Biševo
Small boats enter the sea cave through a low opening from Balun cove, about 8 km from Komiža. The tourist board puts the best light between about 10:00 and 14:00. The cave entry fee is paid on top of the boat and runs about €18 to €24 for adults, in cash, according to tour listings. Rough seas close the cave. See tz-komiza.hr .
Dubrovnik cable car and Lokrum
The cable car costs €30 return for adults and €8 for children aged 4 to 12, and it closes from January to March and in December. Lokrum costs €30 including the return boat and is closed from mid-December to February. The city’s other tickets are covered in the sightseeing guide . Compare guided options on Viator .
Zadar glass museum
The Museum of Ancient Glass in Zadar costs about €6, though sources differ, and opening hours also vary, so check ahead.
Vukovar Water Tower
The tower in Vukovar was hit by more than 600 shells during the 1991 siege and stayed standing. It is now a memorial viewpoint over the Danube, and visitors treat it quietly. Tickets cost €10 with the lift and €8.50 on the stairs, or €7.50 and €6.00 for children. It is open daily 09:00 to 21:00 from March to November and 09:00 to 19:00 from December to February. Vukovar is far east in Slavonia, so plan it as a long day or an overnight. See vukovarskivodotoranj.hr .
