Dubrovnik Walking Routes: Old Town to Lapad
Dubrovnik on Foot: Five Self-Guided Routes
The Old Town is car-free and compact, and every route below can be walked without a guide. The five routes range from a free dawn stroll to a coastal promenade with swimming stops.
Route one: Stradun at dawn
Between 06:30 and 07:30 the street is nearly empty. Walk from Pile Gate to Luža Square, then loop through the side lanes. Pass Onofrio’s Large Fountain, Sponza Palace and the Jesuit Stairs. Nothing to pay.
Route two: the City Walls
The 1.94 km circuit passes Minčeta Tower and Bokar Fort, and the adult ticket is about €40 in the main season. Fort Lovrijenac is included on the same ticket. The ticket covers one tour with no re-entry, and the Walls shop sells it. Start at opening and keep a bottle of water, since there is little shade.
Route three: Old Port and Porporela
Stroll the historic Arsenal, then walk out along the Porporela breakwater to watch boats and ferries. It takes minutes and gives the best low-level view of the walls.
Route four: Lapad promenade
Take the Libertas city bus to Lapad, where a €1.73 prepaid ticket (€2.50 from the driver) is valid for 60 minutes, per the Libertas price list . Walk the Šetalište kralja Zvonimira promenade under pines past cafes and rocky swimming shelves.
Route five: Mount Srđ trail
The gravel trail climbs about 2 km from the Jadranska magistrala through pines to the summit. Stay on the marked path, because unexploded mines remain in parts of the hinterland outside resorts. Carry a torch for the descent. The cable car is an option for the way down, at €17 one-way, but it is closed from January to March and in December.
Guided options
Licensed local guides lead Old Town and Game of Thrones walks, usually at €25 to €38 per person. Look for guides from the Dubrovnik Tourist Guides Association. Compare walking tours to check durations and group sizes.
A guided heritage walk covers the Sephardic synagogue founded in 1408 on Žudioska ulica and the Franciscan cloister.
Dress and manners
Fines apply on the spot for walking through the Old Town shirtless or in swimwear. Wheeled bags are strongly discouraged on the cobbles. Wear shoes with grip, because the limestone becomes slippery after rain.
Verdict
Do the dawn Stradun walk first, then the Walls at opening. Save the Lapad promenade for late afternoon with a swim at the end. For a fuller plan, see the 3-day itinerary .
