Sightseeing in Utrecht
Utrecht’s old centre is small enough to cover on foot in a day. Most of the main sights cluster around Domplein and the two canals, the Oudegracht and the Nieuwegracht, with museums a few minutes away. Prices are in euros.
Domplein
The Dom Tower is 112.5 m tall, the highest church tower in the Netherlands, begun in 1321 and finished in 1382. A restoration costing roughly 37 to 40 million euros ended on 9 November 2024, and the tower now stands free of scaffolding. The climb is by guided tour only, up 465 steps. Adults pay 13.50 euros and children 4 to 12 pay 8.50. Book at domtoren.nl .
The tower and the cathedral are separate buildings. In 1674 a storm brought down the nave of St. Martin’s Cathedral, the Domkerk, and it was never rebuilt. The choir and transept still stand across the square from the tower. The church was built between 1254 and 1517 as a Catholic cathedral and has been Protestant since 1580. Utrecht’s Roman Catholic cathedral, Sint-Catharinakathedraal, is on Lange Nieuwstraat. Check domkerk.nl for opening times.
Between the church and the university hall, the Pandhof is a 14th-century cloister garden with medicinal herbs and a fountain of St. Martin.
Remembrance on and near Domplein
A bronze woman holding a torch, made by Corinne Franzén-Heslenfeld in 1949, stands on Domplein as the Resistance Monument for people from Utrecht who died in the resistance. Along Maliebaan, Johannes de Jong, the Roman Catholic archbishop who spoke out against the Nazis, lived at number 40, while the National Socialist movement (NSB) had its headquarters at number 35. Stolpersteine, small brass plaques set in the pavement, mark the homes of victims across the old centre. These places call for quiet and respect and are not photo backdrops.
Museums
The Rietveld Schröder House at Prins Hendriklaan 50 was built in 1924 and became a UNESCO site in 2000. Entry is by timed online slot only, adults 19 euros. See rietveldschroderhuis.nl .
The Centraal Museum at Agnietenstraat 1 is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00, with adult entry at 18 euros. It holds the world’s largest collection of Rietveld design pieces, paintings by the Utrecht Caravaggisti and a 1,000-year-old oak ship found in 1930.
Museum Catharijneconvent at Lange Nieuwstraat 38 is the national museum of Christian art and history, in a 15th-century monastery, with illuminated manuscripts and altarpieces. The museum’s website lists current hours and prices.
Canals and houses
The Oudegracht curves for about 2 km through the centre. Walk the upper street for shops or take the stairs down to the wharf for terraces. The Nieuwegracht is quieter and residential, lined with lime trees and 17th-century mansions. On Kromme Nieuwegracht, Paushuize was begun in 1517 for Adriaan Florenszoon Boeyens, who became Pope Adrian VI in 1522. He never lived there, and the house is viewed from outside.
Getting around
Utrecht Centraal is 27 minutes from Amsterdam. Tap a contactless card or phone at the gates, on entering and leaving. Take care of cyclists: red-asphalt lanes are theirs, and traffic is fast and quiet.
