Self Guided Walks in Klaipeda
Klaipėda is easy to explore on foot. The Old Town is flat, the lanes are cobbled, and the main sights sit close together on either side of the Danė River. Wear shoes that cope with uneven stones. Walks beyond the centre need a ferry or a bus, and prices are in euros.
Old Town and river route
Begin on Theatre Square, beside the Drama Theatre. The Ännchen von Tharau fountain stands here, honouring the Memel-born poet Simon Dach. The fountain dates from 1912 and the present figure is a reconstruction from around 1990. The tourism site klaipedon.lt describes it as a talking sculpture.
From the square, wander the Old Town lanes. The layout is a rectangular grid dating from the 17th century, and the half-timbered and red-brick warehouses along it are the main sight. Small bronze sculptures are tucked into the streets, so keep looking at corners and rooflines.
Walk down to the Danė, where the wooden barque Meridianas is moored. It was built in Turku, Finland, in 1948 and now houses a restaurant. Near the Castle Bridge the museum ship Sūduvis is moored, open for visits at EUR 6, or EUR 3 reduced.
Finish at the castle site on Priešpilio g. 2. The Castle Museum is open 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:30, and tickets cost EUR 6, or EUR 3 reduced. The Sculpture Park is free. Allow a half day if you want to go into the museums.
Clock and Watch Museum detour
The Clock and Watch Museum is at Liepų g. 12, an easy extension of the route. It is closed on Mondays. Adult entry is EUR 5.
Smiltynė forest and shore walk
Take the Old Ferry from E. Galvanausko bul. 1 to Smiltynė. The round-trip passenger ticket is EUR 1.70, and the ticket covers your return. From the landing, paved paths lead through pine forest to the beach, and a walk of about 1.6 km brings you to the Lithuanian Sea Museum at Smiltynės g. 3. The ferry is the only way across the strait, so build your timing around the return crossing.
Northern Pier
The Northern Pier at Melnragė is a long breakwater where you can walk out and watch ships enter the harbour. Stay off the wet boulders, keep back from the edge in strong wind, and do not swim near it.
Walks on the Curonian Spit
The Smiltynė to Nida bus runs about every two hours, EUR 8.00 per person, and puts several walks within reach. The Hill of Witches in Juodkrantė is a free forest walk past about 80 wooden sculptures. The Nagliai Dead Dunes trail runs about 1 km along a marked path and is open only in season. The 2026 season ran from 17 April to 18 October, and adults pay EUR 5 by card. In Nida, use the wooden stairs and marked paths on the Parnidis Dune and do not climb or slide on the dune faces.
Coastal path to Dutchman’s Cap
North of the city, a coastal path through Seaside Regional Park leads to Dutchman’s Cap, a cliff of about 24 m roughly 2 km north of Giruliai. The route is free.
