Romantic Entebbe: Island Lodge and Spa
Travel advisory, October 2026: The US State Department rates Uganda Level 4, Do Not Travel. It raised the rating from Level 3 in May 2026 because of an Ebola outbreak in the region, and it also cites crime, terrorism, unrest and Uganda’s anti-LGBTQI+ law. The UK FCDO does not advise against travel to Uganda as a whole, but it warns that terrorists are very likely to try to attack and that same-sex activity is illegal under the 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act. Check travel.state.gov for the current US level, read both governments’ advice before you book, and buy insurance that covers your whole itinerary.
Entebbe suits a quiet couple’s break more than a busy one. The lake is wide, the evenings are warm, and the town is calm after the capital. The options below are few but good, and they rely on lakeside settings, a spa, a golf resort and an island lodge. Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Uganda, so same-sex couples should read the advisory above carefully.
A night on Ngamba Island
Ngamba Island, a chimpanzee sanctuary about 23 km south-east of Entebbe, has an overnight option at the Ngamba Ecolodge, which offers luxury tented cottages. The official Chimpanzee Trust page mentions sunset cruises and bonfires for guests. Speedboats leave Entebbe daily at 09:00 and 12:45 and take about 45 minutes. Reservations are required, and the trust quotes prices when you book through its official site .
Spa and golf at Kigo
The Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa is at Kigo on the Entebbe road, on the Kampala side of town. It has an 18-hole golf course and the Serena Maisha spa. Contact the resort for room and treatment rates before you plan a budget.
Lakeside dinner
Beachside restaurants such as 2Friends and Goretti’s are the usual choices for a dinner by the water. Check that your pick is open before you travel, and arrange a ride back to your hotel after dark.
Sunset on the lake
A boat trip at sunset is the classic romantic outing. Ask your hotel to arrange a licensed boatman, and make sure you both wear lifejackets.
Staying out of the water
Do not swim, wade or paddle at Lido, Spenah or Aero beach or anywhere else on the Entebbe shore. Bilharzia, hippos and crocodiles live in the lake, and drownings have happened. A hotel pool is the place to swim. A sunset from the sand, a drink in hand, is the lake at its best here.
A stroll in the botanical gardens
Entebbe Botanical Gardens, laid out in 1898, is a gentle place for a slow walk among old trees, with black-and-white colobus monkeys and hornbills overhead. Check opening hours and fees before you go. Keep food out of sight, because the monkeys are wild.
Planning notes
Entebbe is a short stop on many Uganda routes, and an evening or two here makes a calm start or end to a longer trip. Book your room early for weekends and holidays. If you plan to add a safari afterwards, the multi-day page covers the main routes.
