Walking Tours in Lahij: Bazar Street Circuit
Travel advice, October 2026: the UK FCDO advises against all travel within 5 km of Azerbaijan’s border with Armenia and against all but essential travel to the south-western districts affected by the 2020 and 2023 conflicts, where landmines and unexploded ordnance remain. The US lists Azerbaijan at Level 3, reconsider travel. Lahij and the paths below are outside those areas. Do not walk toward the Armenia border or the Iran border. Check gov.uk and travel.state.gov .
Walking is the way to see Lahij. Vehicles need permission to enter the village, so everyone covers the lanes on foot, and several longer trails start nearby. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip. The cobbles are steep river stones and are slippery when wet.
The village circuit
Allow 2 to 3 hours at a slow pace. The route below passes the main sights in a loop.
- Park in the riverside lot at the village entrance and walk in for under 10 minutes. Cross Lil Bridge (1931), a pedestrian-only wooden-beam bridge.
- Walk up Bazar Street, also called Böyük (Great) Street, past the working coppersmith workshops. Step in, watch, and ask before taking photographs.
- Pass the Badavun mosque (1791) and the Zavaro mosque (1805) with its village spring. These are active places of worship, so look from the outside, dress modestly and avoid prayer times.
- See the Agholu Mosque building (1902), now the Lahij history museum. Entry is about 2 to 3 AZN and hours are usually 10:00 to 19:00, so confirm locally.
- Cross to the Aragit side of the river, where the Yukhari Aragit mosque (1814) stands.
Along the way you may notice old stone-lined drainage under the streets and the ruins of a 72-room caravanserai. Do not expect a marked trail with signs. The reserve describes 11 craft neighbourhoods, so you can wander away from the main street too.
Niyal trail to the fortress ruins
This is the main hike above the village. The trail starts at the southern edge of Lahij, near the stream crossing. It is about 4.5 hours return, with about 900 m of ascent. The first waymarked route in Azerbaijan, laid out in 2018, marks the way to the ruined fortress, and the first 4 km are waymarked. The rest to the 2,063 to 2,112 m summit is unmarked. The ruins are overgrown and are reached on foot. It is not difficult for a trained hiker.
Go between summer and early autumn. Take a local guide or a GPS track. Shepherd dogs at the summer camp are a hazard, so keep your distance and do not run.
Zarnava to Mushkamir
This 7 km walk takes about 3 hours. It starts at the Zarnava suspension footbridge, 74 m long over the Girdiman stream, on the Ismayilli to Lahij road. A rocky dirt road leads down to Zarnava village. The bridge may charge a small entry fee.
Longer hikes
- Lahij to Basgal: 18 km via Taglabiyan, from a secondary listing. Confirm the route with a local guide.
- Muju to Lahij: 10 km, about 5 hours, hard, through Shahdag National Park.
Guides and safety
A guesthouse can arrange a guide for a village walk. Rustam Rustamov speaks English. Agree the price and length first, as no standard fee is published. Stay out of the Girdimanchay river bed after rain, since the gorge floods fast. Bring cash in AZN.
