Romantic Sousse: Spas and Sea Views
Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advice before booking; some border and military areas of Tunisia are closed to tourists. Sousse and its resort coast are outside the FCDO warning zones.
Sousse suits a quiet, slow break: a spa, a guesthouse in the old Medina and long evenings by the sea. The romance here is in the setting and the pace, not in any single attraction.
Thalassotherapy
Sousse is known for sea-water spa treatments. Mövenpick Resort & Marine Spa Sousse, on Boulevard du 14 Janvier, is a five-star resort on most listings with a thalassotherapy centre. Hasdrubal Thalassa & Spa at Port El Kantaoui has an indoor sea-water pool and spa facilities. Treatment menus, couples’ packages and prices change, so ask the hotel directly before you book. Renovation works were listed at the Mövenpick for July 2026, so check the current status.
A Medina guesthouse
Dar Antonia is a small courtyard guesthouse in the Medina with four rooms, a tiled courtyard with a fountain, a rooftop terrace and a small lounge, steam room and library. Booking listings mention a seasonal pool from May to October. They disagree about whether it has a restaurant, so confirm meals when you book.
Evening walks
The seafront promenade along Plage Boujaafar is at its best at sunset, when families and couples stroll along it. Port El Kantaoui marina, about 10 km north, has quiet quays for an evening walk. Wear flat shoes on the Medina’s polished stone.
Hergla cliffs
Hergla is a small cliff-top town about 24 km north-west of Sousse, with white houses and blue doors, and the Halk el Menzel lagoon below, where migratory birds including flamingos gather in season. It makes a calm half-day trip by taxi or louage.
Days that add to the mood
A morning in the Medina, ending at the Kasbah garden with its view over the rooftops and port, pairs well with a spa afternoon. The Archaeological Museum is closed on Mondays.
Practical notes
- Pay in Tunisian dinars (TND) and keep exchange slips.
- Book spa slots ahead in summer.
- July and August are very hot, so plan outdoor time for morning and evening.
- Tunisia is a Muslim-majority country, so dress modestly away from the beach.
