Manchester Sights from Library to Quays
Manchester’s main sights cluster in a few areas, and most are free. Check opening days, because the John Rylands Library, Castlefield Viaduct and several museums do not open every day.
John Rylands Library
The neo-Gothic library at 150 Deansgate is free and open Wednesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00, closed Sunday to Tuesday. Its reading room looks like a cathedral nave. Famous items such as the St John Fragment are held in its collections and are not always on display. The research room is by appointment only.
Manchester Cathedral
The cathedral on Victoria Street opens Monday to Saturday from 9:30 to 16:00 and Sunday from 12:00 to 16:00. Entry is free, with a suggested donation of GBP 5. Free guided tours run on weekdays and Saturdays when volunteers are available.
Castlefield
Castlefield is where Manchester began, with the reconstructed Roman fort gateway at Mamucium, the canal basin and cast-iron bridges. Castlefield Viaduct is a National Trust sky park on a Victorian railway viaduct, open Wednesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 and free to enter.
Central Library and Albert Square
The domed Central Library at St Peter’s Square opened in 1934. Opening hours vary, so look at the library’s page. The Town Hall in Albert Square has been closed since 2018 for restoration, and the council’s target for completion is spring 2027. View the building from outside. The Christmas Markets from 6 November use Albert Square and nine other sites.
Salford Quays
The Lowry and the Imperial War Museum North stand at the Quays in Salford, a separate city from Manchester. Take the Metrolink. Entry to the war museum is free.
Places of remembrance
The Glade of Light, between the cathedral and Chetham’s, remembers the 22 people killed in the Manchester Arena attack of 22 May 2017. It opened in January 2022. Visit quietly, as it is a place of mourning. The Peterloo Memorial on Peter Street marks the massacre of 16 August 1819, and the Alan Turing Memorial in Sackville Gardens stands beside the Beacon of Hope, a memorial to people lost to HIV and AIDS.
