Guided Tours and Boat Trips in Sousse
Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advice before booking any trip; some border and military areas of Tunisia are closed to tourists, and travelling against FCDO advice can void insurance. Sousse and its resort coast are outside the FCDO warning zones.
Sousse has fewer organised attractions than its size suggests, and most of them are sold through hotel desks and online marketplaces. This page covers what exists, what to ask before you pay and which options are better done independently.
Guided Medina visits
The Medina is compact and easy to walk alone, but a licensed guide adds context on the Ribat, the Great Mosque and the Kasbah museum. Ask your hotel or the local tourist office for a licensed guide, and agree the length and price before you start. No standard fee tiers are published, so treat any figure quoted online as indicative.
Entry fees are separate from guiding. The heritage agency’s page showed 8 TND for the Ribat and 10 TND for the Archaeological Museum for non-residents before the April 2026 tariff change, and the museum is closed on Mondays. Guided groups pay the same gate fees as everyone else, so confirm what a tour price includes.
Pirate-galleon cruises
Replica pirate galleons leave from the marina at Port El Kantaoui, about 10 km north of Sousse. Marketplace listings describe trips of roughly two to four hours, and some sail to the Kuriat islands with a swim stop. The listings do not agree on prices, departure times or the exact operators, so compare a few and read the inclusions. Check the weather on the day, since sailings depend on the sea, and keep an eye on children near the rails.
Coach excursions
Hotel desks sell coach tours to El Jem, Monastir, Mahdia and Kairouan. These save you working out trains and louages, but entrance fees are often extra. El Jem is about 1 hour 15 minutes from Sousse by train, so you can also do it yourself. Southern Tunisia (Matmata, Douz, Tozeur) is a multi-day trip rather than an excursion and needs a licensed operator.
Off-road quad tours
Quad and buggy tours run through countryside tracks north of the city. Choose a licensed operator, insist on a helmet and ask about the guide’s experience with beginners. The terrain is farmland and scrub rather than desert.
Animal attractions
Camel and horse rides are sold along the resort strip. Welfare standards vary and are hard to judge from a brochure, so skipping them is the easy choice. Dolphin shows and captive dolphin encounters are not recommended.
Choosing an operator
Operators change from season to season, so compare several listings and read recent reviews before paying.
