Romantic Tel Aviv: Sunsets and Old Jaffa
Travel advice. Before booking a trip for two, check your own government’s current travel advice for Israel and look at it again close to departure. Alerts, flight disruption and airspace closures can come at short notice, so choose flexible bookings and travel insurance, and note where the nearest shelter is at your hotel. The UK government advice is a clear place to start.
Tel Aviv’s romance is outdoors and low-key: the sea at golden hour, old stone lanes and a long walk with nowhere to be. Costs are in shekels (₪).
Sunset at Jaffa
Old Jaffa sits on a hill above a small port. Walk down from Clock Tower Square, pass the flea market, and look for the Abrasha Park viewpoint, which gives a view back along the beaches to the Tel Aviv skyline. The sun sets over the sea, and the stone lanes empty out as the light turns. The Jaffa flea market runs roughly Sunday to Thursday in the daytime, to early afternoon on Friday, and is closed on Saturday, but bars and cafes around it stay open on Saturday night.
The Tayelet at golden hour
The beachfront promenade is flat and well lit, and it connects the Tel Aviv Port to Jaffa. Late afternoon is cooler and quieter than midday. Between May and October, the official bathing season, you can swim in front of lifeguards, who work about 07:15 to 16:45. In winter, a walk on the sand is the better plan because the sea is rough and there is no lifeguard cover.
Neve Tzedek in the evening
Neve Tzedek, founded in 1887, is a small district of low stone houses, galleries and boutiques along Shabazi Street. It is quietest after the shops close and before dinner, and it is best explored on foot.
A morning at Gordon Pool
Gordon Pool, at 14 Eliezer Peri Street, is a saltwater pool on the seafront. Published figures put adult entry at around ₪65, with early-morning opening on weekdays, so check hours before you go.
A market dinner
HaBasta, at 4 HaShomer Street beside Carmel Market, is a market-led wine restaurant, and booking ahead for weekend evenings is wise. Carmel Market itself closes by late afternoon and is shut on Saturday, so go at lunch or earlier.
Art for two
The Tel Aviv Museum of Art stays open until 21:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and a regular ticket is ₪55. On a rainy evening it is a good indoor option, and the entrance is currently through the Herta and Paul Amir Building. See tamuseum.org.il .
Where to stay
Rooms near the sea and in Neve Tzedek book up around Pride Week in June and the autumn Jewish holidays, so reserve early. Compare stays on Tel Aviv hotels .
