Multi-Day Trips from Sousse
Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advice before booking; some border and military areas of Tunisia are closed to tourists, and travelling against FCDO advice can void insurance. The south and the Algerian and Libyan border areas need particular care.
Sousse is central on the Tunisian coast, so it works as a base for longer trips. The honest picture is a short list: a heritage loop in the Sahel, a southern circuit that needs more days than most tour brochures suggest, and a northern loop towards Cap Bon.
Sahel heritage loop
El Jem, Kairouan, Monastir and Mahdia are all within about an hour or two of Sousse. They can be done as separate day trips, or as an overnight loop if you drive. El Jem is about 1 hour 15 minutes by train, and Kairouan is about 60 km west by road. There is no direct public transport between El Jem and Kairouan, so a car or tour makes the combination easier. Fees at the major monuments changed on 1 April 2026 and rise again in January 2027, so check at each gate, and see the official El Jem page for hours.
Southern Tunisia
Matmata, Douz, Chott el Djerid and Tozeur lie a long way south. Douz is about 450 km from Sousse by road, so a two-day return trip leaves almost no time at the sights. Plan three days at least, and go with a licensed local operator.
- Matmata: underground cave dwellings and Hotel Sidi Driss, a basic cave hotel used as a Star Wars location.
- Douz: the gateway to the Sahara, with dunes beyond town.
- Chott el Djerid: a salt pan with sinking mud and no water, so stay on the causeway road.
- Tozeur: palm oasis, with Star Wars sets near Tozeur and Nefta.
The border mountain oases of Mides and Tamerza sit on the Algerian frontier and may fall inside the FCDO band where it advises against all but essential travel. Check the live advice map and go only with a licensed Tozeur operator. Never head for Chaambi, Mount Salloum, Mount Sammamma, Mount Mghila or the Libyan border belt, which the FCDO advises against visiting at all. Sbeitla, in Kasserine Governorate, is essential-travel-only.
Camel and quad rides are sold at Douz. Welfare standards vary, so choose carefully or skip them. July and August heat in the south is dangerous, so go in spring, autumn or winter.
Cap Bon loop
A northern loop through Nabeul, Hammamet and the Cap Bon peninsula is possible as an overnight trip. It is a long drive, so check each site’s hours before you commit.
