Manchester Walking Routes by Theme
Central Manchester is flat and compact, so most of these walks take one to three hours. Wear waterproofs, as rain can arrive quickly, and check opening days for any museum stops.
Castlefield, Roman and canal
Start at the Deansgate-Castlefield Metrolink stop. The route passes the reconstructed Roman fort gateway at Mamucium and drops to the canal basin, then crosses Merchants Bridge. Climb to Castlefield Viaduct, a free National Trust sky park open Wednesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00. Stay on the towpaths and keep away from the water’s edge.
Radical Manchester
This route follows the story of democracy. Begin at the Peterloo Memorial on Peter Street, where the massacre of 16 August 1819 is remembered. Continue to the People’s History Museum at Spinningfields, which is free and closed on Tuesdays. The Pankhurst Centre on Nelson Street, the home of Emmeline Pankhurst, is open Thursdays and Sundays from 11:00 to 16:00. The walk is best on one of those days.
Northern Quarter
Around Stevenson Square, Tib Street and Dale Street you find murals, independent shops and record stores. It is a short walk from Piccadilly Gardens.
Cathedral quarter
Manchester Cathedral and Chetham’s Library stand side by side on Long Millgate, close to Victoria station. The Glade of Light sits between them and remembers those killed in the 2017 Arena attack, so walk through quietly. Chetham’s is open by pre-booked tour only.
Canal Street and the Turing Memorial
The Gay Village centres on Canal Street. Sackville Gardens holds the Alan Turing Memorial and the Beacon of Hope, a memorial to people lost to HIV and AIDS. Treat both with respect.
Salford Quays
Take the Metrolink to the Quays and walk the waterfront between the Lowry and the Imperial War Museum North. It is flat and open, with views across the old docks.
Music history
The Haçienda on Whitworth Street West closed in 1997 and was demolished in 2002. Apartments stand on the site, with a plaque on the street. Salford Lads Club on Coronation Street appears on a Smiths album cover and is a working youth club, so check its website about visits.
Tips
- Free Bus services 1 and 2 run in loops around the centre.
- Guided walks are sold by local guides, so compare options on GetYourGuide before booking.
