Romantic Getaways in Kuusalu Parish
Kuusalu parish offers a quiet, low-key kind of romance. The parish has no town promenade. What it does have is forest, a bog boardwalk, small harbours and old manor houses on the Gulf of Finland, about 40 to 55 km east of Tallinn. It suits couples who like to walk, take photographs and stay somewhere calm. Kuusalu village itself is a small inland settlement, and the pleasant places lie along the coast.
A night at Viinistu
Viinistu is the best base for a couple. The village has an art hotel and a restaurant on the same harbour as the Viinistu Art Museum, which holds Jaan Manitski’s private collection and is the only private art museum in Estonia. A ticket costs EUR 6, or EUR 3 with a concession. Opening days change by season, so check the museum’s info page before you plan the day around it. Ask the hotel directly about rooms, meals and prices. If you want to compare other stays, try Booking.com .
A slow walk at Tsitre
Tsitre was a seaside summer estate, and its park on Kolga Bay now holds a 0.5 km tree trail, a beach and an observation tower over the bay. Nearby Kolga manor makes a good photo stop from the road. It is privately owned and partly restored, and the main building opens only by appointment or on guided tours, so book ahead through kolgamanor@gmail.com if you want to go inside.
Sunrise or sunset on the Viru boardwalk
The Viru bog boardwalk is free and open to walk. The trail is 3.5 km one way, and the boardwalk covers 3 km of it. Early morning or evening light over the open bog is the draw. Mist comes and goes with the season and cannot be promised. Bring boots, keep to the boardwalk and take a torch if you plan to walk near dusk, since the tower is about 1.3 km from the car park. The bog is highly flammable, so no candles or fires. Bog pools are not a place to swim on a date: the water is cold and dark, there is no lifeguard, and the moss is fragile.
The northern tip
Pähknemännik, the northernmost point of mainland Estonia, is about 4 km from Viinistu. The sandy beach there is for swimming in warm weather only. Check the weather before you go, as the coast is exposed.
Practical tips
- Drive. Buses on the E20 stop at the Loksa tee exit, 1.3 km from the bog trailhead, and the coast beyond is far easier by car. See peatus.ee for timetables.
- Book the hotel and any manor visit before you travel.
- Pack for wind and rain in every season.
- Autumn and winter days are short, so plan walks for the middle of the day.
