Romantic Evenings in Addis Ababa

Travel advisory, October 2026: Ethiopia is in an active conflict. Fighting in the north resumed on 23 September 2026, and the UK Foreign Office (FCDO) advises against all travel to Tigray, Amhara and Gambela, plus parts of Oromia, Afar and other regions. It does not advise against travel to Addis Ababa itself, but it warns of a high terrorism threat, reports of attacks on military sites in the capital, and crime hotspots at Meskel Square, Bole and Entoto. The US State Department rates Ethiopia Level 3, Reconsider Travel, in an advisory dated before the September fighting. Couples should read the current UK FCDO advice and the US State Department advisory before booking and again before flying.

Addis Ababa is a working capital rather than a classic romantic escape, and the choice of romantic outings is short. What it does offer is a handful of resorts with spas, an evening of live Ethio-jazz and the slow ritual of coffee. This page lists those, with the safety conditions that apply to each.

A lakeside stay at Bishoftu

Kuriftu Resort & Spa sits beside one of the Bishoftu crater lakes, roughly 48 to 62 kilometres from the capital, about 1 to 1.5 hours by road. Room rates are listed at about USD 115 a night on booking aggregators, so check the current rate before you commit. The resort has a spa and a water park that was reported to open in 2020. The route follows the Addis-Adama Expressway, a stretch the FCDO exempts from its all-but-essential warning for East Shewa, although the exemption does not make the corridor secure. Go by the expressway only, and do not drive on towards Adama or Awash.

A forest lodge at Entoto

Kuriftu Entoto Resort & Spa is a forest lodge with views over the city and a spa. Entoto is a place the FCDO names as a crime hotspot, so arrange a driver for the whole journey, arrive in daylight and avoid walking the quiet paths as a couple. The altitude is between 2,600 and 3,100 metres, so expect to feel it on the first day, and drink water.

Sunset above the city

A drive up to the Entoto heights at sunset is the simplest romantic outing in the city. Hire a driver for the evening and stay with the car rather than walking the quiet paths. Plan to be back in the city soon after dark.

Coffee for two

A coffee ceremony takes three rounds, and it is easy to spend an hour at it. Many hotels and cafes serve it. Galani Coffee has branches at Jackross, Lebu, Churchill and Entoto, with daily opening hours posted on its official site . Hours vary by branch, so check before you set off.

An evening of music

Fendika, famous for azmari singers and Ethio-jazz, plays as Fendika@Hyatt at the Hyatt Regency on Meskel Square. There is no published schedule, so look at Fendika’s website or its social media. Meskel Square is a named crime hotspot, so go door to door by car, keep your phones out of sight and leave passports in the hotel safe.

Practical notes

Keep bookings flexible, because the options are few and the advisory can change quickly. Birr trade at about 160 to 165 to the US dollar in October 2026. Cards work at larger hotels and some restaurants, so carry cash too.
