Bishoftu Crater Lakes Day Trip from Addis
Travel advisory, October 2026: Ethiopia is in an active conflict. Fighting in the north resumed on 23 September 2026, and the UK Foreign Office (FCDO) advises against all travel to Tigray, Amhara and Gambela, plus parts of Oromia, Afar and other regions. It does not advise against travel to Addis Ababa itself, but it warns of a high terrorism threat, reports of attacks on military sites in the capital, and crime hotspots at Meskel Square, Bole and Entoto. The US State Department rates Ethiopia Level 3, Reconsider Travel, in an advisory dated before the September fighting. Read the current UK FCDO advice and the US State Department advisory before you book and again before you fly. Beyond Addis Ababa, only one day trip is covered here.
Day trips are the thinnest part of an Addis Ababa visit right now. Most of the land around the capital falls under FCDO warnings, and the usual northern excursions are not options. One short corridor is treated differently, and it is the only day trip this page recommends.
Bishoftu crater lakes
East Shewa is an area where the FCDO advises against all but essential travel, with exceptions. The exceptions are the Addis-Adama Expressway and the land within 10 kilometres either side of the Addis-Bishoftu stretch. Bishoftu, also called Debre Zeit, sits on that stretch, about 48 to 62 kilometres from the capital depending on the source, or roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by road. The exemption is not a statement that the area is secure, so check the FCDO regional risks page before you go.
Several crater lakes lie around the town. Lake Hora is known for watersports, bird life and an annual festival. Bishoftu, Bishoftu Guda and Kuriftu are the other lakes people name, and Chelekleka fills only seasonally. Kuriftu Resort & Spa Bishoftu is a lakeside resort with a water park that was reported to open in 2020. Its day-pass price is not published, so ask the resort directly and check that the water park is running.
Take the expressway out and back. Do not carry on to Adama, Awash or the A1, where the FCDO flags attacks on vehicles. Leave early, tell your hotel where you are going, and aim to be back in Addis Ababa well before dark. Pick a driver through your hotel instead of hailing a blue-and-white taxi.

Sites south and west: ask before you go
Several heritage places lie south and west of the capital. Menagesha Suba forest is about 40 kilometres away and has been protected since the 15th century. Wenchi crater lake is about 155 kilometres west. Tiya, Adadi Mariam and Melka Kunture lie roughly 50 to 85 kilometres south along the Butajira road, and Tiya is a UNESCO site. None is named in the FCDO lists, but no recent security information turned up for any of them. Some of these routes pass areas the FCDO flags for unrest. Check the advisory first, ask a licensed operator, and treat each as uncertain. No itinerary or booking link is offered for them here.
Not open to day trippers
Debre Libanos, the Blue Nile Falls and the northern towns are well outside a day trip, and the FCDO advises against travel to them at present.
Practical tips
Altitude catches some people out, so drink water and go slowly on your first day. Carry cash in small birr notes, at about 160 to 165 to the US dollar in October 2026. Keep your phone out of sight, and use offline maps because GPS can be unreliable. Mobile and internet service can be cut when protests start without warning.
