Multi-Day Trips from Addis Ababa in 2026
Travel advisory, October 2026: Ethiopia is in an active conflict. Fighting in the north resumed on 23 September 2026, and the UK Foreign Office (FCDO) advises against all travel to Tigray, Amhara and Gambela, plus parts of Oromia, Afar and other regions. It does not advise against travel to Addis Ababa itself, but it warns of a high terrorism threat, reports of attacks on military sites in the capital, and crime hotspots at Meskel Square, Bole and Entoto. The US State Department rates Ethiopia Level 3, Reconsider Travel, in an advisory dated before the September fighting. Read the current UK FCDO advice and the US State Department advisory before you book and again before you fly.
No multi-day trip out of Addis Ababa can be recommended in October 2026. The routes that normally fill this page run through places where the FCDO advises against all travel or all but essential travel, and fighting has been reported there in September and October. This page explains why, and then points to the better use of a longer stay: more days in the capital and a short trip to the Bishoftu crater lakes.
Why the usual circuits are off the table
The northern historic circuit and the desert trips are the ones visitors ask about. Lalibela, Gondar, Bahir Dar, the Blue Nile Falls, the Simien Mountains, Axum, the Danakil Depression and Debre Libanos are all places where travel is advised against at present, and none is described or priced here.
Two facts explain the picture. The FCDO advice covers the whole of Amhara and Tigray, including towns far from the fighting, and Lalibela lies on the Amhara front line named in September 2026 reporting. Afar carries its own warnings, and foreigners are reportedly unable to use Afar airports.
Flying does not solve the problem. Ethiopian Airlines halted flights to Mekelle, Axum and Shire from 23 September, and the FCDO says all civilian flights to and from Tigray were suspended on 22 September. It adds that northern flights may be suspended or cancelled at short notice. A flight into a region leaves the same advice in force on the ground.
What about the south
The southern Rift Valley and the Bale area are sometimes suggested as alternatives. Current security conditions there are unclear, so this page does not recommend or describe them. Parts of Oromia and the Guji zones appear on the FCDO lists, so read the regional advice carefully before you consider anything outside the capital.
A longer stay in Addis Ababa
Three to five days in the city covers a good deal. Spend one day on the National Museum and the Ethnological Museum, another at Unity Park, and an evening on live music. Details are on the sightseeing and activities pages. Plan a half day at Entoto by car, remembering that the FCDO names it as a crime hotspot.
Add one day at the Bishoftu crater lakes, about 48 to 62 kilometres away on the Addis-Adama Expressway, which the FCDO exempts from its warning for East Shewa. Do not treat the exemption as a guarantee, and do not go on towards Adama or Awash.
Planning notes
- Dates fall inside a tense calendar. The Great Ethiopian Run is listed for 22 November 2026 and Timkat for 19 January 2027, though dates may change, and the FCDO notes large crowds and a heightened threat at festivals.
- Apply for a visa only through the official portal at www.evisa.gov.et . Fee figures vary between guides, so confirm the fee there.
- Check that your insurance still pays out for travel to Ethiopia, and keep your plans easy to change.
- The birr trades at about 160 to 165 to the US dollar in October 2026.
