Romantic Azerbaijan: Baku Evenings and Sheki
Travel advice for couples. The UK FCDO advises against all travel within 5 km of Azerbaijan’s border with Armenia and against all but essential travel to the south-western districts affected by the 2020 and 2023 conflicts, where landmines and unexploded ordnance remain. The US State Department rates Azerbaijan Level 3, Reconsider Travel. The Armenia and Russia land borders are closed, and couples arrive by air. The places below, in Baku, Sheki and the Gabala mountains, are outside those areas. Read the UK advice and the US advisory before booking.
Romance in Azerbaijan is quiet and short on set pieces: seafront evenings, glasses of tea, a night in an old town and mountain air. There is no dedicated honeymoon industry to lean on, so this guide lists the confirmed pleasures and leaves the rest to you. Fees are in manat (AZN), about 1.70 to the US dollar.
An evening on Baku Boulevard
The seafront promenade is free and busiest after the day cools. Walk it towards the International Mugham Center, a modern hall on the Boulevard devoted to mugham, the modal vocal and instrumental art that UNESCO listed in 2008. Opening hours and programmes were not confirmed, so check what is on before you plan a dinner around it. The metro costs 0.60 AZN a ride if you want to cut the walk short.
The bay at night from Highland Park
The funicular up to Highland Park costs about 1 AZN. From the terrace you can see Baku Bay and the three Flame Towers lit up after dark, and the view is free. Go before sunset for the light, and stay for the towers.
Tea in the Old City
Azerbaijani tea is served black in pear-shaped glasses called armudu, with preserves such as white cherry, walnut or fig, plus lemon and lump sugar. The Tea Treasury Museum in the Old City is free to enter and a gentle way to spend an hour together. Tea houses (cayxana) are central to social life across the country. The Old City’s lanes are worth wandering slowly, and the Maiden Tower costs 19 AZN for a foreign adult, open daily from 10:00 to 19:00. See the official tariff table .
A night in Sheki
Sheki is about 283 km from Baku and the bus takes 6 to 6.5 hours, so make it an overnight rather than a hurried stop. The Palace of the Sheki Khans, with its shebeke stained-glass windows, costs 15 AZN for a foreign adult, and interior photography is restricted. Wander the lanes of the old quarter, share a clay pot of piti and finish with Sheki halva. For a stay, compare Sheki hotels .
Gabala and Lake Nohur
Gabala is about 220 km from Baku, 3.5 to 4 hours by road, in the Caucasus foothills. Lake Nohur nearby has rowing boats and quiet mountain air. The Tufandag resort runs summer rope lines, a swing and hiking trails, and its own page carries current prices.
Summer by the Caspian
In summer, Amburan Beach Club at Bilgah on the Absheron coast was reported open in a 2026 guide. The Caspian is shallow and salty there. Check that it is open before you go, as beach clubs change from year to year.
Planning
Fly in, apply for an e-visa at evisa.gov.az at least three days ahead, and carry AZN cash outside Baku. Bolt and Yango work in Baku, and the FCDO notes some taxis overcharge, so agree the fare.
