Oxford as a Base for a Few Days
Oxford as a base for a few days
Oxford does not have organised multi-day tours of its own. The city itself fills one to two days. A stay of three or four days works when you use Oxford as a base for day trips to Blenheim Palace, the Cotswolds and Bicester Village, and you should not stretch the city sights to fill more time.
Days one and two in the city
Day one. Book a Christ Church timed slot before the Great Hall closes at 12:00 on weekdays, then take a Bodleian tour. Spend the middle of the day in the Covered Market and finish with the University Church tower, where the last admission is 16:30.
Day two. Visit the Ashmolean, the Natural History Museum and the Pitt Rivers Museum, all free. Then go punting from Magdalen Bridge Boathouse, which is open until 30 November. The Cherwell Boathouse reopens in spring.

Days three and four outside the city
- Blenheim Palace: take Stagecoach S3 or S7 from the railway station or Magdalen Street, about four an hour combined.
- The Cotswolds: the GWR train to Moreton-in-Marsh takes about 35 minutes, and Pulhams 801 continues to Bourton-on-the-Water. The Pulhams X52 bus runs to Burford and Cheltenham up to every 2 hours Monday to Saturday.
- Bicester Village: about 15 minutes by Chiltern Railways from Oxford station.
- Stratford-upon-Avon: about 45 miles away, so it is a long day, at about 1 hour 15 minutes or more by train with a change.

Getting around without a car
Do not drive into the centre. The Park and Ride sites at Redbridge, Pear Tree, Seacourt, Thornhill and Oxford Parkway sell a combined ticket. From 17 August 2026 it costs £3 and covers 16 hours of parking plus return bus travel for up to five people. It is not valid on the Airline or the Oxford Tube. See the Oxford Bus combined ticket page .
Six traffic filters began operating on 28 September 2026. They apply to cars only. Hollow Way and Marston Ferry Road are filtered 07:00 to 09:00 and 15:00 to 18:00. St Clement’s, St Cross Road, Hythe Bridge Street and Thames Street are filtered 07:00 to 19:00. The penalty is £70, or £35 if paid within 21 days, and a first offence in six months gets a warning. The county council filter page has the map.
The Zero Emission Zone pilot charges £2, £4 or £10 a day depending on emissions band, from 07:00 to 19:00, seven days a week. Details are on the Zero Emission Zone page .
Getting to and from Oxford
