Liverpool Walking Routes and Beatles Trail
Liverpool’s centre is small enough to cover on foot, and the best routes link its music, Georgian streets and waterfront. Pier Head, Lime Street and Hope Street are about 15 to 25 minutes apart. Prices are in pounds sterling (GBP). You can follow the routes below independently or search for a guided walk with a local operator.
Cavern Quarter
Mathew Street is the centre of the Beatles story in the city. The Cavern Club charges about GBP 6 for adults, paid by card at the door, and the Grapes pub is nearby. The Liverpool Beatles Museum at number 23 has four floors and charges GBP 20 for adults, GBP 15 concession, GBP 8.50 for ages 5 to 16 and GBP 50 for a family. A short walk away on Stanley Street, a statue of Eleanor Rigby by Tommy Steele is easy to find.
Georgian Quarter
Rodney Street is the spine of the Georgian Quarter. From there, Falkner Square is a short stroll, and St James Gardens lies beside the Anglican Cathedral. Hope Street runs between the two cathedrals. The Anglican Cathedral opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00, with the tower last entry at 16:30, and the Philharmonic Dining Rooms at 36 Hope Street is a good place for a stop.
Pier Head to the Albert Dock
This waterfront walk begins at the Three Graces: the Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building. The Museum of Liverpool and the Beatles statue are close by. From there, walk south along the water to the Royal Albert Dock. The Merseyside Maritime Museum and the International Slavery Museum there have been closed since January 2025 and will not reopen before 2028. Tate Liverpool is at RIBA North on Mann Island, which is free and on the way.
Bold Street and St Luke’s
St Luke’s Bombed Out Church stands at the corner of Bold Street and Berry Street. It was bombed in the May Blitz of 1941 and left as a roofless memorial to civilians killed in the raids. The garden is free to enter. Keep voices low and treat it as a place of remembrance.
Beatles sites beyond the centre
Penny Lane, Strawberry Field, Mendips and 20 Forthlin Road are too far apart for a walking route. Strawberry Field in Woolton is reached by bus 76, with an exhibition and garden tour at about GBP 12.45. Mendips and Forthlin Road are visited only on a pre-booked National Trust minibus tour at GBP 37 for adults.
Tips
- Hope Street climbs gently between the two cathedrals, so wear comfortable shoes.
- Carry a card, since the Cavern Club, the Beatles Story and many other venues are cashless.
- Do not walk out onto the sand at Crosby Beach to reach the statues. Stay within about 50 m of the promenade.
