Liverpool in Three Days
Three days is enough to cover Liverpool’s waterfront, its two cathedrals and one football stadium, with a day trip if you add a fourth. The plan below groups sights by area to keep walking short. Prices are in pounds sterling (GBP).
Day 1: waterfront and Beatles
Start at Pier Head with the Three Graces: the Royal Liver Building (1911), the Cunard Building (1916) and the Port of Liverpool Building (1907). The Museum of Liverpool next door is free. Take the 50-minute Mersey Ferries River Explorer cruise, which costs GBP 14 for adults and calls at Seacombe.
Walk to the Royal Albert Dock for the Beatles Story, about GBP 20 for adults and booked as a timed slot. Tate Liverpool is a free temporary display at RIBA North on Mann Island, open daily until 17:50. The Merseyside Maritime Museum and the International Slavery Museum at the dock are closed until at least 2028, so leave them out of your plans.
In the evening, head to Mathew Street and the Cavern Club. Entry is about GBP 6 for adults, paid by card at the door.
Day 2: Hope Street and Woolton
Hope Street links the two cathedrals. The Anglican Cathedral is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00, and tower entry stops at 16:30. The Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King is at the other end of the street, with a free nave and a separate small fee for the crypt, so check the amount. The Philharmonic Dining Rooms at 36 Hope Street is a long-running listed pub that is good for lunch.
In the afternoon, take bus 76 to Strawberry Field in Woolton, where the exhibition and garden tour is about GBP 12.45. Return in time for dinner in the city.
Day 3: Anfield and Chester
Book the Anfield Stadium Tour and Museum at GBP 26 for adults, or tour Goodison Park on selected dates. Afterwards, take the Wirral Line to Chester, about 45 minutes away, for the Roman walls and the Rows. Fans of horse racing should note the Grand National at Aintree on Saturday 10 April 2027, with the festival running from 8 to 10 April.
Where to stay
The centre, the Albert Dock area and the Georgian Quarter around Hope Street all put you within walking distance of most of the above. Merseyrail covers the rest.
Tips
- A Merseyrail Day Saver is about GBP 5 to GBP 6.50, but check merseyrail.org for the area it covers.
- The Albert Dock is a Grade I listed waterfront rather than a World Heritage Site, since Liverpool lost that status in 2021.
- Beatles homes at Mendips and 20 Forthlin Road need a pre-booked National Trust minibus tour at GBP 37 for adults.
