Romantic Liverpool: Dinner, Music, Views
Liverpool is a good city for a couple’s weekend built around food, live music and architecture, though it has fewer set-piece romantic experiences than some destinations. There are no scenic lakes, no evening tower openings and no couples’ paddling on the tidal River Mersey. What it does offer is a handful of strong restaurants, concert halls and walks. Prices are in pounds sterling (GBP).
Dinner
The Art School at 1 Sugnall Street (L7 7EB) is a Michelin-listed fine dining restaurant that opens Tuesday to Saturday, so book well ahead and check the current menu prices. Maray on Bold Street is another dinner option, and its Albert Dock site has unconfirmed opening days, so check before you go. For something more relaxed, the Philharmonic Dining Rooms at 36 Hope Street is a long-running listed pub.
Music
The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on Hope Street dates from 1939 and its Art Deco interior is worth seeing. Concerts are ticketed, so look at the programme before you travel. The Cavern Club on Mathew Street is the more casual option, with entry of about GBP 6 for adults paid at the door and live music until 02:00 on Friday and Saturday.
Neighbourhoods for a stroll
Hope Street links the Anglican and Metropolitan cathedrals. The Anglican Cathedral is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00, with tower entry in the daytime until 16:30 and some Sunday closures for bell ringing. It is a pleasant place to climb together for city views, at about GBP 8 per adult.
On Lark Lane, Maranto’s reopened after a refurbishment in January 2026, and The Albert pub is on the same street. Check opening days before you plan an evening there.
On the water
For a gentle outing, the Mersey Ferries River Explorer takes 50 minutes and costs GBP 14 per adult. It calls at Seacombe. Treat the river as a view only. Swimming, kayaking and paddleboarding on the Mersey are dangerous because of strong tides and shipping, and the only paddling to consider is with an operator inside the dock basins.
Staying over
The Albert Dock area, the city centre and the Georgian Quarter near Hope Street keep most of the places above within walking distance.
Tips
- Book restaurants and concerts a week or more ahead for Friday and Saturday nights.
- The Albert Dock is a handsome Grade I listed waterfront, although it lost its World Heritage status in 2021.
- The Beatles Story is about GBP 20 per adult for a couple’s afternoon indoors.
