Multi-Day Trips from Entebbe: Ssese, Jinja
Travel advisory, October 2026: The US State Department rates Uganda Level 4, Do Not Travel. It raised the rating from Level 3 in May 2026 because of an Ebola outbreak in the region, and it also cites crime, terrorism, unrest and Uganda’s anti-LGBTQI+ law. The UK FCDO does not advise against travel to Uganda as a whole, but it warns that terrorists are very likely to try to attack and that same-sex activity is illegal under the 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act. Check travel.state.gov for the current US level, read both governments’ advice before you book, and buy insurance that covers your whole itinerary.
Most longer trips in Uganda start at Entebbe airport. Uganda’s own Ebola outbreak was declared over in late August 2026, the outbreak in the DRC continues, and arrivals at Entebbe are screened, so check current health advice before you travel. Prices are in US dollars unless marked UGX.
Ssese Islands
The Ssese Islands are an archipelago of 84 islands that make up Kalangala District. Bugala is the main island. The ferry runs from the Nakiwogo landing site in Entebbe, and it usually leaves in the afternoon. Confirm the departure with the operator, Nation Oil Distributors Ltd (NODL), because the crossing time can run long. Swim only in lodge pools, since the lake carries bilharzia.
Jinja and the Nile
Jinja has the rafting and bungee operators, including Adrift. It is a long day from Entebbe, 2 to 4 hours each way depending on traffic, so plan to stay a night if you want to raft or bungee jump.
Lake Mburo and the western parks
Lake Mburo National Park, Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Kibale, Bwindi and Mgahinga all need several days. Domestic flights from Entebbe serve some airstrips; Aerolink Uganda and Bar Aviation fly these routes, so confirm schedules with them.
For gorilla trekking in Bwindi or Mgahinga, a standard permit costs USD 800 for foreign non-residents, or USD 600 in the low season. The minimum age is 15.
Carry these cautions for the west:
- Queen Elizabeth National Park: two tourists and their driver were killed there in October 2023. Travel with an established operator and avoid self-driving after dark.
- Areas near the DRC border, including Semuliki, Rwenzori Mountains, Kasese and Bundibugyo: follow current advice, and expect border crossings to close at short notice.
- Bwindi and Mgahinga: security staff often accompany treks. Never join a tour that crosses into the DRC.
Ngamba Island overnight
The Ngamba Ecolodge on Ngamba Island has tented cottages. Speedboats leave Entebbe daily at 09:00 and 12:45, and the trip takes about 45 minutes. The Chimpanzee Trust handles reservations.
Planning tips
Allow a buffer day at the end of any trip so a delay does not cost you a flight. Rainy seasons run from March to May and October to November, so allow extra time on unpaved roads. The Uganda Wildlife Authority site has park information to read before you pick a park.
