Day Trips from Entebbe: Mabamba to Kampala
Travel advisory, October 2026: The US State Department rates Uganda Level 4, Do Not Travel. It raised the rating from Level 3 in May 2026 because of an Ebola outbreak in the region, and it also cites crime, terrorism, unrest and Uganda’s anti-LGBTQI+ law. The UK FCDO does not advise against travel to Uganda as a whole, but it warns that terrorists are very likely to try to attack and that same-sex activity is illegal under the 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act. Check travel.state.gov for the current US level, read both governments’ advice before you book, and buy insurance that covers your whole itinerary.
Entebbe makes a handy base for short outings, because several of Uganda’s best-known stops sit within a morning’s travel. Uganda’s own Ebola outbreak was declared over in late August 2026, the outbreak in the DRC continues, and arrivals at Entebbe airport are screened, so check current health advice before you go.
Mabamba Bay
Mabamba Bay is about an hour from Entebbe by road, and some operators run a boat from Nakiwogo instead. It is a papyrus wetland known for the shoebill stork. A licensed guide is required and you travel by canoe only. Go early, and treat a sighting as likely but never guaranteed. Prices depend on group size and transport, about USD 45 to 200 in all.
Ngamba Island
Ngamba Island is a half-day trip by boat. Speedboats from Entebbe leave daily at 09:00 and 12:45 and take about 45 minutes to reach the chimpanzee sanctuary, which is about 23 km out. Book ahead with the Chimpanzee Trust .
Kampala by expressway
The Kampala-Entebbe Expressway cuts the trip to about 35 to 45 minutes in normal traffic, compared with 2 to 3.5 hours on the old road in heavy traffic. It is a toll road with plazas at Mpala, Kajjansi and Busega, and a light vehicle pays about UGX 5,000 per trip. In the city, the Kasubi Tombs reopened in 2026, and the Uganda National Mosque and the Baha’i temple are the other usual stops. The Uganda Museum on Kira Road is closed and has no reopening date, so leave it off your list.
Mpanga Forest Reserve
This reserve near Mpigi is managed by the National Forestry Authority. Fees, trails and the exact distance vary, so confirm them before you set out.
The Equator at Kayabwe
The Equator stop sits at Kayabwe on the Masaka road and combines well with a drive south-west from Kampala. Allow time for traffic on the way back.
Jinja is a long day
Jinja, home of the Nile rafting and bungee operators, is a long day from Entebbe. Allow 2 to 4 hours each way depending on traffic, and think about staying a night instead.
A short ferry crossing
A small ferry crosses between Entebbe’s Nakiwogo landing and Buwaya in Mpigi District, about 4 km and 15 minutes. Reports say it carries passengers only since vehicle boarding was suspended in 2024, and maintenance closures happened in 2025, so ask locally before you plan around it.
Swimming
Keep out of Lake Victoria on any day trip. It carries bilharzia, hippos and crocodiles. Use hotel pools only.
