Chiang Mai Day Trips: 6 Worth It (No Riding)
Chiang Mai’s real value beyond the Old City is what surrounds it: Thailand’s highest peak, an observation-only elephant sanctuary, free waterfalls you can climb barefoot, and two places, Chiang Rai and Pai, that everyone tries to squeeze into a single day and shouldn’t. Doi Inthanon, the ethical elephant sanctuaries, and the Sticky Waterfalls are unambiguous day trips. Chiang Rai works as a long day if your schedule demands it. Pai does not; book it as an overnight or skip it.

Chiang Mai: 9 Things Worth Doing
Most trip plans treat Chiang Mai as a one-night stopover before the real business: an elephant sanctuary, Doi Inthanon, maybe Pai. That undersells the city itself. Inside the moat alone there are two temples worth their entrance fee, a mountain temple 15km up the road that’s a genuine half-day, and two weekend markets that are not the same event under two names. Give the city three or four days on its own before you book anything outside the city limits.
