Chiang Mai’s real value beyond the Old City is what surrounds it: Thailand’s highest peak, an observation-only elephant sanctuary, free waterfalls you can climb barefoot, and two places, Chiang Rai and Pai, that everyone tries to squeeze into a single day and shouldn’t. Most trip plans treat Chiang Mai as a one-night stopover before the real business: an elephant sanctuary, Doi Inthanon, maybe Pai. That undersells the city itself.
