Multi Day Trips and Overnights from Boston
Boston works best as a multi-day stay in the city itself. The overnight extensions below are things you arrange yourself with trains, ferries and a hotel. The city part of a trip is well covered. The road-trip legs, such as the White Mountains and the Maine coast, are less certain, so check drive times and opening hours yourself.
A car-free stay in the city
Boston is compact and walking-first, and the T covers the core. Parking downtown is scarce and expensive, so a car is a liability. The subway costs $2.40 a ride, a 1-Day Pass is $11.00 and a 7-Day Pass is $22.50, which pays for itself after about ten rides. Silver Line SL1 from Logan Airport to South Station is free. A sensible split is one day on the Freedom Trail and in the North End, one around the harbor and aquarium, one in Cambridge and one at Fenway and the museums. The 3-day itinerary and the 5-day itinerary lay this out day by day. Fares are on mbta.com .
Salem and Cape Ann overnight
Salem (Zone 3, $8.00 one way) and Gloucester (Zone 7, $11.00) or Rockport (Zone 8, $12.25) can be paired over one night using the Commuter Rail. This avoids driving in Salem, which is extremely crowded in October.
Plymouth over two days
The Plimoth Patuxet Heritage Pass (about $46) and Combination Pass (about $44) are both good for two days, so you can split the museum and Mayflower II across a night. Trains run to Plymouth in Zone 8 at $12.25. Check plimoth.org for the season and the Mayflower II status.
Provincetown overnight
Fast ferries take about 90 minutes each way and cannot carry cars. Operators sail seasonally, some only on weekends late in the season, so check the operator and its fares. On summer weekends the CapeFLYER train runs from South Station to Hyannis on Friday to Sunday between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The 2026 fare was $40 round trip, with children 11 and under free. See capeflyer.com .
Martha’s Vineyard overnight
The Steamship Authority crossing from Woods Hole to Vineyard Haven takes 45 minutes and cost $11 one way for adults in 2026 ($22 round trip) and $5.75 for children 5 to 12. Allow roughly 1.5 to 2 hours each way to reach Woods Hole from Boston, and check your route. Nantucket needs a trip to Hyannis plus a ferry. Both islands suit an overnight, not a day trip. Fares are on steamshipauthority.com .
White Mountains
Flume Gorge in Franconia Notch State Park, New Hampshire, is listed at $18 for adults online and $21 at the window, with children 6 to 12 at $16 and $19. Reservations are strongly encouraged and the visitor center is listed as seasonal, roughly May to late October, so confirm dates before you drive. Check drive times to the Kancamagus Highway and the Maine coast on a live map before you plan, since traffic and season change them.
Timing
Boston winters, roughly December to March, bring nor’easters, heavy snow and wind chill. Check the forecast and MBTA and ferry service alerts, and expect ferries and island routes to run reduced timetables. The Boston Marathon is Monday 19 April 2027.
