Multi-Day Trips From Seattle
Seattle works as a base for self-guided rail and road loops rather than a menu of packaged multi-day products. There is no set of ready-made itineraries to book from the city itself, so most trips here are ones you assemble: a train ticket, a rental car or a ferry reservation, and a hotel at the far end. Prices are in US dollars and exclude sales tax.
Vancouver, British Columbia
Amtrak Cascades takes about 4 hours to reach Vancouver. US preclearance at Pacific Central Station began on 8 June 2026, which speeds the return crossing for US-bound passengers. A passport is required to cross the border, and Vancouver is not a day trip. Read the WSDOT announcement on preclearance for the details of the new process.
Portland, Oregon
Portland is about 3.5 hours by Amtrak Cascades or about 3 hours by car. That makes it an overnight stop, not a day trip. New Amtrak Cascades trainsets launched on 30 September 2026, and fares start from about $29 according to secondary sources, so look at the Amtrak Cascades site for the fare on your date.
San Juan Islands
Washington State Ferries serve the islands from Anacortes, about 1.5 hours’ drive north of Seattle. Current fares are not confirmed here (one 2026 report put a passenger fare near $18), and summer sailings fill up, so treat the islands as an overnight and reserve ahead.
Olympic Peninsula loop
Plan two to three days by car. The ferry, the drive to Port Angeles and the 17 miles up to Hurricane Ridge add up to about 3.5 to 4.5 hours each way, so Olympic National Park does not work as a day trip for most visitors. Entry is $30 per vehicle and cashless. The Hurricane Ridge Day Lodge burned on 7 May 2023 and has not been rebuilt, so only temporary trailers and portable toilets are there, and as of 17 October 2026 there is no drinking water on the ridge. In winter the road is open Friday to Sunday and holiday Mondays, weather permitting, and tire chains are required. The Hoh Rain Forest visitor center opens Friday to Sunday only, and in summer you should arrive before 8 a.m. Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort and Lake Crescent Lodge were open as of mid-October alerts, though seasons change. Check the Olympic conditions page before you drive. If you need rooms near the park, compare Port Angeles stays .
Leavenworth overnight
Leavenworth is about 2.5 hours from SeaTac, which is a long day and a comfortable overnight. Christmas lighting is reported from 27 November to 24 December 2026. Its Bavarian look comes from a 1960s economic makeover rather than German settlement. See Leavenworth’s official site for events.
Mount Rainier overnight
Paradise stays open in winter for snowshoeing, but the Longmire to Paradise road closes nightly from 1 November. Mountain weather changes fast, so pack layers and check NPS road alerts before you start.
Planning tips
Book trains and ferries before you reserve rooms, because sailing and departure times set the shape of the trip. Puget Sound is cold marine water all year, so skip swimming and keep paddling to calm days with a life jacket.
