Melbourne: Day Trips Worth Adding

This guide is for a city-first trip, our Melbourne city guide and its itineraries cover the CBD, the MCG, and St Kilda on their own terms. If Victoria’s day trips are actually the point of your visit, not a single add-on day, our Melbourne, Australia: Base for Day Trips guide builds the whole trip around them. What follows are the options that genuinely work as a single extra day from a city base.
Yarra Valley: the easiest genuine day trip
About 1h15 by car or tour, no overnight required. Wine cellar doors are the draw, and Healesville Sanctuary adds koalas, kangaroos, and wombats in a bush setting for the second half of the day. This is the day trip to pick if you only have room for one.
Dandenong Ranges and Puffing Billy
About an hour out, and reachable by Metro train to Belgrave, no car needed. The heritage steam train through the ranges is the reason to go, and the forested hills themselves are noticeably cooler and greener than the city. Book the Puffing Billy timed departure ahead in peak season, it sells out.
Ballarat and Sovereign Hill
About 1.5 hours from Melbourne, and workable by V/Line train, no car required. Sovereign Hill recreates an 1850s gold-rush town, gold panning and the underground mine tour are the two things worth budgeting real time for. It easily fills a full day, don’t plan anything else around it.
Mornington Peninsula
About 1-1.5 hours, and doable as a day trip or an overnight in Sorrento or Portsea. The Peninsula Hot Springs and the wineries are the draw. ⚠ The Brighton bathing boxes some visitors also want to see are in Melbourne’s own bayside suburbs, not out on the peninsula, so don’t build a peninsula day around them.
Phillip Island: only if you can handle a late return
About 1.5-2 hours each way. ⚠ The little penguins come ashore at dusk, which means a genuinely late return to Melbourne, and car or a guided tour is the only realistic way to get there, the V/Line bus doesn’t serve the Parade itself. Tickets run around AUD $33 and are worth booking ahead. If a late night back doesn’t suit your trip, the St Kilda breakwater penguins are the in-city alternative, free but also needing a timed reservation.
The Great Ocean Road needs its own trip, not a day
⚠ Be honest with yourself about this one: driving to the Twelve Apostles and back in a single day is a real 12-hour push, not a comfortable outing. If it’s on your list, treat it as a 2-day, 1-night trip rather than squeezing it into a city stay, our Melbourne, Australia: Base for Day Trips guide is built around giving it the time it needs.
Picking just one
If you only have a single extra day, the Yarra Valley or the Dandenongs are the two that don’t ask anything of your schedule beyond the day itself. Everything else on this list either needs a car, a late return, or genuinely deserves an overnight, worth knowing before you book. Compare day-tour options if you’d rather not sort transport yourself, and check the official site for each before you go, AUD prices move around.
