Manchester Three Day Plan
Manchester works well as a base for three days in the city or a longer stay with day trips. Several places close on set days, so the order below respects that. Prices are in pounds sterling (GBP).
Day 1: industry and politics
Start at the Science and Industry Museum on Liverpool Road, which is free and open daily from 10:00. Walk through Castlefield to see the Roman fort reconstruction, the canal basin and the viaducts. Castlefield Viaduct, the National Trust sky park, is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00. Finish at the People’s History Museum, which is free and closed on Tuesdays. The John Rylands Library on Deansgate is free but opens only Wednesday to Saturday, so put Day 1 on one of those days if you want it.
Day 2: stadiums and Salford Quays
Book an Old Trafford tour, from about GBP 28 for adults, or the Etihad tour, from about GBP 28. Old Trafford tours do not run on first-team home matchdays, so check the fixture list. In the afternoon take the Metrolink to Salford Quays for the Lowry and the Imperial War Museum North. Check what is on at Aviva Studios on Water Street for the evening.
Day 3: museums and the old town
Manchester Museum on Oxford Road is closed on Mondays, so avoid that day. Visit the National Football Museum in Cathedral Gardens, then Manchester Cathedral, which is free with a suggested GBP 5 donation. A pre-booked tour at Chetham’s Library takes about an hour. The Town Hall is closed for restoration, with completion targeted for spring 2027, so view it from Albert Square only.
Extending the stay
- Edale and the Peak District, about 40 minutes by train, for a full walking day.
- Liverpool, about 35 to 55 minutes by train, for the Albert Dock and the Beatles Story.
- Chester or Hebden Bridge for a quieter day.
- From 6 November the Christmas Markets fill ten city centre sites, most until 22 December.
Tips
- Metrolink fares are frozen for 2026. An all-zone single is GBP 4.60, and a one-day anytime travelcard for all zones is GBP 7.10.
- Tap in at the platform reader before boarding, as travelling without a valid ticket risks a penalty of up to GBP 120.
