Manchester Day Trips by Train
Manchester sits between the Pennines and the Cheshire plain, so a day away is easy by train. Journey times below are approximate and come from timetable listings, so check National Rail or Northern before you go, and prices are in pounds sterling (GBP).
Peak District from Edale
Trains on the Hope Valley line leave Manchester Piccadilly roughly every hour, and Edale takes about 40 minutes. The village is the start of the Pennine Way and a gateway to Kinder Scout. The high moors have peat bogs, sudden cloud and cold wind even in summer. Carry a paper or offline map, waterproofs and boots, and turn back if visibility drops. A short shuttle train links Edale with Hope, a gateway to Castleton and its caves.
Liverpool
Trains from Piccadilly and Victoria run to Lime Street. The fastest take about 35 minutes and slower services 45 to 55 minutes. The Royal Albert Dock, the Beatles Story, the Museum of Liverpool and the Cavern Club are the usual targets. Liverpool lost its UNESCO World Heritage status in 2021. The dock building of Tate Liverpool has been closed since 2023, and a free temporary display is at RIBA North. The Maritime and International Slavery museums have been closed to the public since January 2025.
Chester
Chester is about an hour by train. The Roman walls make a circuit of the old city, the medieval Rows have two levels of shops, and the cathedral is close by. Chester Zoo is a separate paid visit in Cheshire, so plan it as its own day.
Hebden Bridge
The Calderdale line from Victoria reaches Hebden Bridge in roughly 35 to 40 minutes. It is a small Pennine town with independent shops and canal walks. Hardcastle Crags is a National Trust woodland nearby.
Quarry Bank
The National Trust’s cotton mill at Styal stands on the River Bollin, not on a canal, and there are no canal cruises. From 1 March 2026 an adult ticket is GBP 24.00, a child (5 to 17) GBP 12.00 and a family ticket GBP 60.00, with free entry for members. Styal station is about a 12-minute walk. Between 2 November and 12 February the site is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and the Apprentice House is by guided tour only.
Buxton
The Georgian spa town of Buxton is about an hour from Manchester by train. Check the timetable, as services are less frequent than to Edale.
Tips
- Rail fares change by time of day, so look up the off-peak price for your date.
- Start hill walks early in winter, because daylight is short.
