Lahij Overnight and Multi-Day Trips
Travel advice, October 2026: the UK FCDO advises against all travel within 5 km of Azerbaijan’s border with Armenia and against all but essential travel to the south-western districts affected by the 2020 and 2023 conflicts (landmines and unexploded ordnance). The US lists Azerbaijan at Level 3, reconsider travel. Lahij is outside those areas, and the routes below stay in the Greater Caucasus foothills and Ismayilli district. Never route a trip from Lahij toward the Armenia border, Karabakh or the Iran border. Check gov.uk and travel.state.gov .
Lahij works best as an overnight stop. It is about 180 km from Baku, and the last stretch is a steep gorge road, so a night in the village turns a rushed day into an unhurried visit. Longer plans use it as a base for mountain walking in the Greater Caucasus.
Two days in Lahij
Day 1. Travel from Baku via Shamakhi and Ismayilli, which is 3 to 4 hours by car. Check in at a guesthouse, then walk the village in the afternoon: coppersmith workshops on Bazar Street, the history museum and the stone lanes. Dinner and breakfast are usually included. Named options are Rustam Rustamov’s guesthouse, Abbasov’s Guest House (rooms for up to six), Evim (listed as Evim Otel or Evim Eco Hotel), Lahic Guesthouse and Ancient Lahij Guest House. No nightly price is confirmed, so ask when you book.
Day 2. Pick one of two outings. The Niyal hike takes about 4.5 hours and gains about 900 m. The Zarnava suspension footbridge and the 7 km Zarnava to Mushkamir walk take about 3 hours. After that you can return to Baku, or continue to Sheki.
Mount Babadag
Babadag, at 3,629 m, is reached from Lahij. The route is about 8 km. Trucks go to the end of the track and the last climb is on foot. Snow lies for 9 to 10 months a year, so visits start from mid-July. The Hazrat Baba sanctuary on the mountain is a pilgrimage site, so be respectful if you meet pilgrims. The mountain straddles Ismayilli and Quba districts. A guide is recommended. Climb Mount Niyal first as a warm-up. Price figures are not confirmed, so ask the operator.
Lahij to Khinalug trekking
Operators sell a trek that links Lahij, Babadag and Khinalug. Permit rules for the border-zone area around Khinalug are not confirmed, so ask the operator exactly what you need before you commit.
Silk Road loop
A road loop can link Shamakhi (Diri Baba Mausoleum and Juma Mosque), Lahij, Basgal, Ivanovka, Chabiant winery in Hajihatamli, and Gabala. Gabala is a long drive via Ismayilli, so split the loop over several nights.
Lahij to Basgal on foot
An 18 km walk joins the two villages by way of Taglabiyan. It comes from a secondary listing, so confirm the route with a guide.
Practical points
- Bring enough cash in AZN. A village ATM is reported, but do not rely on it.
- The Ismayilli to Lahij road is among the most landslide-prone in Azerbaijan, and snow and ice can close it in winter. Ask your host or the traffic police before you set out.
- Shepherd dogs guard the summer camps on Niyal and other slopes.
- Never camp or wade in the Girdimanchay river bed. The gorge floods quickly after rain.
- Most visitors need an e-visa from the official portal at evisa.gov.az, so check the current terms there.
