Day Trips from Kairouan: El Jem and Sousse
Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advice before any trip outside the city. Some border and military areas of Tunisia are closed to tourists, and travelling against FCDO advice can void your insurance.
Kairouan makes a good base for the Sahel and the central plain. El Jem and Sousse are the safe, well-trodden options, and Monastir fits on a longer day. Distances below are rough and the roads are two-lane in places, so allow extra time.
El Jem amphitheatre
El Jem is about 70 km away and holds one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is no direct public transport from Kairouan, and the usual route is to change at Sousse. A private car with a driver, or an organised tour, is simpler. Fees for the heritage monuments changed on 1 April 2026, so expect about 20 to 30 TND at the gate and ask what the ticket covers. Opening hours change with the season, so check before you go. Go early in summer, when the arena offers little shade.
Sousse medina and ribat
Sousse is about 60 km east and is a UNESCO-listed medina with a ribat, a fortified monastery on the waterfront. Louages and buses run between the two cities. The regional museums in Sousse and Monastir are reported at about 10 TND for foreign visitors.
Monastir
Monastir has a ribat founded in 796 CE and the Bourguiba mausoleum. It combines well with Sousse in a single day, and the coast is where you will find the beaches, because Kairouan itself is inland.
Booking help
If you would rather not drive, El Jem and Kairouan tours from the coast usually combine both sites, with entry fees often extra. The Great Mosque monument page lists the hours for the city’s own sights, which you can fit in before leaving.
Sbeitla
Sbeitla, with its Roman ruins, lies about 100 km away in Kasserine Governorate. The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel there, and against all travel to Chaambi Mountains National Park nearby. Treat it as a place to check on the live advice map first rather than as a casual add-on.
Trips that are too far
Tozeur, Douz, Matmata, Dougga and the Bardo museum are far from Kairouan and need separate trips. The Sahara dunes sit 300 km or more to the south, and beaches are on the coast near Sousse and Monastir.
Getting around
Kairouan has no railway line. Louages and buses run from Tunis, about 126 km away, and from Sousse. The stations sit on the edge of the medina, so ask your hotel for directions. Carry cash in TND for fares and entry, and agree any taxi fare before you set off.
