Kairouan Multi-Day Routes via El Jem
Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advice before you book any multi-day route. Some border and military areas of Tunisia are closed to tourists, and travelling against FCDO advice can void insurance.
Kairouan sits in the middle of Tunisia, about 60 km inland from Sousse and about 126 km south of Tunis. It slots neatly into a short loop of the Sahel and the north, and it should not be stretched into the far south. These routes use only verified geography.
Kairouan, El Jem and the coast: 2 to 3 days
Day one is Kairouan. Arrive early, see the Great Mosque courtyard before the 14:00 close, then the souks and the Sidi Amor Abada museum. Sleep in the city. Dar Hassine Allani is a 3-star guesthouse in the medina with a rooftop terrace and a restaurant, and Hotel La Kasbah is listed as a 5-star hotel on Avenue Ibn El Jazzar. Compare rooms on Kairouan hotels , and confirm rates before you book.
Day two goes to El Jem, about 70 km away, for the Roman amphitheatre. There is no direct public transport from Kairouan, so use a private car or change at Sousse. Continue to Sousse for the medina and ribat, and sleep on the coast.
Day three can be Monastir, with its 796 CE ribat and the Bourguiba mausoleum, or a rest on a Sousse beach.
Tunis, Kairouan and El Jem
Start in Tunis for the Bardo museum, which is closed on Mondays, and Carthage. Louages and buses run from Tunis to Kairouan in about 2 hours, since the city has no railway line. Spend a night in Kairouan, then continue to El Jem and the coast. A grouped ticket may be sold for some sites, so ask what it covers.
Budget the fees
Heritage fees changed on 1 April 2026. A major monument costs about 20 to 30 TND for foreign visitors, with another rise in January 2027. Over three days at four or five monuments, keep a cash reserve in TND for tickets and louages, and carry cash in the souks.
The Sahara is a separate trip
Tozeur, Nefta and Douz are not an add-on from Kairouan. They are 300 km or more to the south, and should be planned as a separate journey with a licensed operator. Never route a trip through Sbeitla or Kasserine, which the UK Foreign Office advises against visiting except for essential travel. Chebika, Tamerza and Midès sit near the Algerian border, so check the live advice map first. Chott el Djerid is a salt pan, not a lake.
Beach bases
Sousse, Hammamet and Djerba are separate beach bases. Kairouan itself has no beach and no water sport.
Practical tips
- Summer highs above 40 C are normal, so pace the days with early starts and an afternoon rest.
- Mawlid and festival dates follow the Islamic lunar calendar and move about 11 days earlier each year.
- Dress modestly at every religious site.
