Krakow Multi Day Trips: Where to Go Next

Kraków runs out before a week does. The city core, meaning Rynek Główny with its ticketed interiors, Wawel, Kazimierz and Podgórze, genuinely fills about two days. Three is the first-timer sweet spot because it adds one day trip. Anything past four is a Małopolska trip with a Kraków start, and planning it that way produces a much better week than stretching the Old Town over six mornings.
Which multi-day shapes actually work

Zakopane is a bad day trip and a good two nights
The bus from Kraków’s MDA station is scheduled at roughly 1h45 to 2h and runs up to sixteen times a day, but realistically it is 2 to 2h30, and on summer weekends and school holidays it stretches to 3h30 or 4h. Doubling that into one day is how people end up with four hours of mountain and eight of coach.
Two nights changes what is reachable. Morskie Oko is about 8 km of mostly paved road each way from the Palenica Białczańska car park, which fills by seven or eight in the morning in season. The Kasprowy Wierch cable car climbs to 1,987 m and its ticket doubles as Tatra National Park entry that day, with park entry otherwise 10 PLN. Does Krakow have a Michelin-starred restaurant?
One, and it holds two stars: Bottiglieria 1881 on Bocheńska Street in Kazimierz, confirmed at two stars for a fourth consecutive year in the 2026 Michelin Guide Poland. Tasting menus run at weekends only, 290 PLN for five courses and 360 for seven, with a shorter à la carte midweek. Book well ahead.
No Kraków restaurant holds a single star, and the nearest one-star is Giewont in Kościelisko beside Zakopane, which is a genuine reason to eat well on a mountain night. Listing sites that describe a dozen or more Kraków restaurants as one-star recommended mean Michelin-selected, which is a different thing. Kraków’s Bib Gourmands are Folga on Plac Nowy, MOLÁM in Piasek, NOAH in Kazimierz, and new for 2026 Nat Bistro and Bufet KRK.
The Jura castle chain, two nights
Between Kraków and Częstochowa runs a limestone upland strung with ruined hilltop castles, the Trail of the Eagle’s Nests. Two nights is what turns it from a castle photograph into a walk. Ojcowski National Park at the southern end is 16 km north of Kraków across about 2,146 hectares of gorge, with nearly 700 inventoried caves, Łokietek and Ciemna as the show caves, and the Brama Krakowska rock gate, two limestone columns about 15 m high some 7 m apart. The park’s symbol is the bat, 17 of Poland’s 25 species. The European bison live at the Niepołomice Forest breeding centre east of the city, with a public viewing platform outside the enclosure and early morning the time to be there.
Auschwitz-Birkenau is one day, from Kraków
Auschwitz Birkenau German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp (1940 to 1945) is about 65 to 70 km west of the city, roughly 1h15 to 1h30 by road and nearer two hours each way once transfers and the shuttle between the two sites are counted. It belongs in a longer trip as a single bounded day taken from a Kraków base.
All entry is booked online at visit.auschwitz.org ; on-site sales ended on 1 March 2026 and nothing is sold at the gate. Admission to the grounds is free and what is paid for is a guide-educator: 150 PLN, or 140 reduced, for the 3.5 hour general tour, and 190 / 170 for the six-hour study tour, with Polish-language departures 10 to 20 PLN cheaper. Entering without a guide is possible only after a cutoff that shifts monthly, 13:00 in December to 17:00 between April and September, and a free pass must be reserved at least seven days ahead for up to ten people. The Dunajec Gorge is worth a night, not a dash
Roughly 100 km south-east in the Pieniny, the raft trip is a punted wooden craft on flat water poled through a limestone gorge by a highlander raftsmen’s cooperative. It is a full day from Kraków and a much better one from a night nearby, because the early departures are the quiet ones and the drive back is long.
What the Krakow Card is, before you buy a three-day one
Unlimited public transport, airport buses included, plus free entry to a changing list of more than twenty museums, sold in one, two and three-day variants, with a cheaper three-day digital pass that carries no transport at all. Transport is the unlimited half and the museums are the free half.
What it excludes is the part that decides whether it pays: Wawel Castle interiors, Wieliczka, Auschwitz-Birkenau and St Mary’s are all outside it. On a multi-day trip where those four are the plan, the card is mostly a transport pass, and a 72-hour MPK ticket at 55 PLN does that job on its own.
Six or seven nights, and what they are actually for
Kraków after the coaches leave. Kazimierz on a weekday evening is a different district from Kazimierz at noon, the square before 8:00 is empty, and Podgórze never really fills up. Add the Tatras, the Jura and the Dunajec around that and a week holds together. Fill it with a fourth Old Town day and it does not.
Split your accommodation rather than commuting. Two nights in the city and two in the mountains beats four in Kraków with two long bus days inside them, and it usually costs less as well.
