Krakow Day Trips: Which Ones Deliver

Two Kraków day trips repay the journey without argument: Wieliczka and Nowa Huta. Both are back in time for dinner, neither needs a coach, and between them they cover the two things this region does better than anywhere else, which is going underground and looking at the twentieth century. Everything else on the usual list wants a harder look at the map before you give up a day for it.

Kazimierz Dolny and Kraków’s Kazimierz district share a name and nothing else, which is how the first one ends up on day-trip lists. The Dolny in its name means Lower, not Little.
Wieliczka: take the train, skip the package
The mine sits 13 km south-east and the SKA1 suburban train from Kraków Główny runs to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia in about half an hour. Same line as the airport, a normal fare, no booking. Buses run from around the main station area rather than the Main Market Square.
Everything underground is guided and there is no unguided option. The Tourist Route is about 3.5 km on foot, roughly 800 steps, down to around 135 m at a steady 17 to 18°C, finishing at St Kinga’s Chapel carved from rock salt. The price is a ladder set by route, guide language, concession and season, with the mine’s own floor at “from 93 zł per person”, and a Polish-language departure costs less than a foreign-language one. Buy at bilety.kopalnia.pl , which says plainly that the mine does not work with intermediaries, or compare Wieliczka tours on Viator if you want the transfer included and have priced the train first.
Is Zakopane worth a day trip or an overnight?
An overnight, for almost everybody. Buses leave Kraków’s MDA station up to sixteen times a day and are scheduled at roughly 1h45 to 2h, which in practice is 2 to 2h30 and stretches to 3h30 or 4h on summer weekends and school holidays. Four to eight hours in a seat leaves very little mountain at the end of it.
If you do go for the day, the Gubałówka funicular climbs about 300 m in under four minutes, and the Kasprowy Wierch cable car reaches 1,987 m with the ticket doubling as Tatra National Park entry that day. Morskie Oko is 8 km of mostly paved road each way from the Palenica Białczańska car park, which fills by seven or eight in the morning in season. Park entry is 10 PLN. Check conditions on tpn.pl .
Ojcow is 16 km north and it is a bat park
Poland’s smallest national park, roughly 2,146 hectares of limestone gorge along the Prądnik, with nearly 700 inventoried caves of which Łokietek and Ciemna are the show caves. Its signature formation is the Brama Krakowska, two limestone columns about 15 m high standing some 7 m apart. Ruined Ojców Castle and the intact Renaissance Pieskowa Skała hold down the local end of the Trail of the Eagle’s Nests.
The park’s symbol is the bat: 17 of Poland’s 25 species live here. European bison are a different trip entirely, at the Ośrodek Hodowli Żubrów breeding centre in the Niepołomice Forest east of Kraków, established in 1936, with a public viewing platform outside the enclosure on the Droga Królewska and about sixteen animals inside it. While we are in that stretch of country: Krzeszowice has the Potocki Palace, and the Cistercian abbey nearest Kraków is at Mogiła in Nowa Huta, which is a tram ride rather than an excursion.
Nowa Huta costs one tram ticket
Trams 4, 10 and 22 take about half an hour from the Old Town on a standard single. The district was laid out from 1949 around what was then the Lenin Steelworks, with monumental socialist realism, Plac Centralny and the later Lord’s Ark church. Podziemna Nowa Huta, a real Cold War shelter beneath a school, costs 18 PLN or 14 reduced and is free on Tuesdays.
It was built next to religious, intellectual Kraków specifically to grow a loyal industrial working class, and its steelworkers turned into a centre of anti-communist resistance. That is the whole trip in one sentence, and it costs less than a coffee on the square.
Auschwitz-Birkenau takes the entire day
Auschwitz Birkenau German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp (1940 to 1945) is about 65 to 70 km west of Kraków, roughly 1h15 to 1h30 by road and nearer two hours each way once transfers and the shuttle between the two sites are counted. Do not put anything else in that day.
All entry is booked online at visit.auschwitz.org ; on-site sales ended on 1 March 2026 and nothing is sold at the gate. Admission to the grounds is free, and a guide-educator is what is paid for, at 150 PLN or 140 reduced for the 3.5 hour general tour and 190 / 170 for the six-hour study tour, with Polish-language departures 10 to 20 PLN cheaper. Unaccompanied entry is possible only after a cutoff that moves month by month, 13:00 in December to 17:00 between April and September, and a free pass must be reserved at least seven days ahead for up to ten people. The Memorial revised its visitor regulations on 1 July 2026.
What people mean by rafting near Krakow
The Dunajec Gorge, roughly 100 km south-east in the Pieniny. A punted wooden raft on flat water, poled through a limestone gorge by a highlander raftsmen’s cooperative. It is a genuine full day and a genuinely good one, as long as you go expecting scenery and a raftsman’s commentary.
Czestochowa and Wadowice, in one paragraph each
Jasna Góra at Częstochowa is Poland’s principal pilgrimage site, a fortified Pauline monastery holding the Black Madonna and drawing over four million people a year. The icon is unveiled twice daily and weekday mornings are quietest. At 1.5 to 2 hours each way it eats the whole day, so go because you want to see it rather than to tick a region.
Wadowice is 50 km out, 45 minutes to 1h15, and it is Karol Wojtyła’s home town. The John Paul II Family Home Museum wraps around his actual childhood apartment and runs about an hour guided, a short walk from the station.
