Krakow Activities Worth Your Zloty

Two Kraków activities are worth paying real money for: the guided descent into Wieliczka, and a Trabant through Nowa Huta. Almost everything else in this city has a cheaper twin that is at least as good, and a fair amount of what gets sold to visitors on the Main Market Square is the expensive version of something free two streets away. Here is where the money actually earns its keep.

Wieliczka is the one big ticket worth buying
Everything underground is guided and there is no independent walking of either route. The Tourist Route is about 3.5 km on foot, roughly 800 steps, down to around 135 m, at a constant 17 to 18°C. The price is a ladder rather than a figure: route, guide language, concession and season all move it, the mine’s own line is “from 93 zł”, and a Polish-language departure is cheaper than an English one.
Book direct at bilety.kopalnia.pl . The mine’s own booking page states that it does not work with intermediaries, which is worth knowing before you buy from anyone else. If you want a coach seat included, compare Wieliczka tours on Viator and price the transfer separately in your head.
Milk bars beat the restaurants on the square, and it is not close
The bar mleczny was invented in Kraków in 1948 and the format is still partly subsidised, which is why soup and a main comes to 20 to 35 PLN. Bar Mleczny Pod Temidą is the only true milk bar inside the Old Town and it is busier and dearer for exactly that reason, with an English menu to match. Bar Mleczny Targowy sits ten minutes further out, costs less, and has no English menu, which is the whole point.
And pay in złoty. The places advertising that they take euros set their own rate, generally 10 to 13 percent worse than the market one, then hand your change back in złoty regardless.
Is a vodka tasting the same thing as a pub crawl?
No, and the operators draw the line themselves. A tasting is six or seven Polish vodkas with local snacks across a few cellar bars over about three and a half hours, built around how vodka is actually drunk here: neat, ice-cold, one shot, alongside pickles, herring or smalec. Żubrówka is made in Białystok, not locally.
Pub crawls are a different product and Kraków has plenty. The live problem is the street tout, often a young woman offering a better bar, who steers drinkers into unlicensed clubs with wildly inflated bills. Documented cases run to drink-spiking and drained accounts. Decline the approach, pay cash, never hand over a card, and call a Bolt or Uber rather than taking an unmarked car idling outside.
Nowa Huta is worth the fare and the Trabant is worth the fare twice
Trams 4, 10 and 22 reach Plac Centralny in about half an hour from the Old Town on a standard single ticket, and walking the socialist-realist boulevards yourself costs nothing beyond that. Crazy Guides runs the vehicle version, genuine Trabants and Ladas, with a 3.5 hour Deluxe at 179 PLN that takes in the abandoned steelworks and a pierogi lunch. Underneath the district, Podziemna Nowa Huta is a real Cold War shelter beneath a school at os. Szkolne 37, 18 PLN or 14 reduced, free on Tuesdays, and almost nobody writes about it.
What does the Krakow Card actually include?
Unlimited public transport, the airport buses included, plus free entry to a changing list of more than twenty museums. Read that order carefully, because the transport is the unlimited part. What it does not cover is the list most visitors care about: Wawel Castle interiors, Wieliczka, Auschwitz-Birkenau and St Mary’s. The museum roster moves, so check it on the day.
The product is called the Kraków Card. That is the name to search for and the name printed on the voucher, so check you are buying that one.
The reseller markup on Wawel is real
English-facing ticket sites quote around 40 euros for the combined Wawel castle route that the castle itself sells for 95 PLN, roughly 22 euros. Buy from bilety.wawel.krakow.pl . The same principle holds outside the Rynek Underground and Schindler’s Factory: anyone offering a skip-the-line ticket on the pavement is not an official channel.
Auschwitz-Birkenau is a full day and it stands alone
Auschwitz Birkenau German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp (1940 to 1945) lies about 65 to 70 km west of Kraków, with the journey and the shuttle between the two sites taking roughly two hours each way in practice.
Entry is booked online only at visit.auschwitz.org ; on-site sales ended on 1 March 2026. Admission to the grounds is free, and what is paid for is a guide-educator, 150 PLN or 140 reduced for the 3.5 hour tour, with Polish-language departures 10 to 20 PLN less. Going in without a guide is only possible after a cutoff that shifts every month, from 13:00 in December to 17:00 between April and September, and the free pass has to be reserved at least seven days ahead. The Memorial updated its visitor regulations on 1 July 2026, so check the current version on its own site.
Free, and better than several paid things
The hejnał sounds live from St Mary’s taller tower every hour of the day and night and breaks off mid-note; the noon call has aired live on Polish national radio since 1927. Collegium Maius’s courtyard is free daily 9:00 to 18:00 with a mechanical clock show on the hour. The Planty ring, the Cloth Hall arcade, Wawel Hill’s courtyard and the fire-breathing Wawel Dragon on the riverbank are all free as well.

Do the transport sum before you buy a pass. A 72-hour MPK ticket is 55 PLN and only pays off if Nowa Huta, the zoo at Las Wolski and the mounds are all on your list. For a core-city trip inside the Planty you will barely ride anything, and a 60-minute single at 8 PLN on the days you do beats any pass in the range.
