Where to Eat in Krakow (Skip the Rynek)
Heads up: some links here are affiliate links. Book or buy through them and we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. We only point you to things we would actually use.
A handful of Old Town restaurants near the Rynek advertise “we accept euros,” and it’s a trap, not a convenience: the merchant-set rate typically runs 10-13% worse than the market rate, and your change comes back in złoty anyway. Pay in PLN, use a card or ATM, and walk a few minutes past the square for the food that’s actually good.

Milk bars, born in this city
Bar mleczny (milk bar) is a subsidized cafeteria tradition that started here, Poland’s first opened on the Main Market Square on 30 May 1948, and a full meal, soup plus a main, still runs 20-35 PLN. Check current status of any specific bar on the city’s official tourism site before building a route around one, a few close or change hours without much notice. Bar Mleczny Pod Temidą is the only true milk bar inside the Old Town itself, with an English menu, busier and pricier because of it. Bar Mleczny Targowy, about 10 minutes further out, has no English menu, is cheaper, and is mostly locals. Bar Grodzki and the oddly decorated Bar Pod Kopytkiem round out the short list worth knowing.
Skip Plac Nowy’s tourist stalls, but not the one that started it
Plac Nowy, Kazimierz, in and around the octagonal Okrąglak hall, is where zapiekanka, the halved-baguette “Polish pizza,” has cult status. Endzior (Zapiekanki u Endziora, Plac Nowy 4B) is the name to know, from roughly 6-10 PLN, and it’s the stall the others are competing with, not a tourist substitute for it.
Poland’s only two-Michelin-star table is here, not Warsaw
Bottiglieria 1881, on Bocheńska Street in Kazimierz, is Poland’s only two-Michelin-star restaurant, its first star came in 2020 and its second in 2023, now four consecutive years at that rank in the 2026 Michelin Guide. Tasting menus run weekends only, 290 PLN for five courses or 360 PLN for seven, with a shorter à la carte on weekdays, book well ahead. Folga, also on Plac Nowy, holds a Bib Gourmand; Karakter (offal-forward) and Kropka. round out Krakow’s roughly 23-25 Michelin Guide Poland entries. Book a Kazimierz food and vodka tour if you want a guided route through this district’s actual dining scene rather than the Rynek’s.
The dishes worth ordering by name
Pierogi ruskie (potato and curd cheese, a Polish Galician dish despite the name) run 15-30 PLN at a milk bar; żurek, the sour rye-fermented soup with bread bowl and egg, runs 18-40 PLN; kotlet schabowy, the breaded pork cutlet, runs 35-55 PLN sit-down and less at a milk bar. Pierogi Mr Vincent in Kazimierz does 10 dumplings for around 16 PLN. Obwarzanek krakowski, the boiled-then-baked pretzel-ring sold from Old Town and Planty carts for a few PLN, is a legally protected name, only bakers in Krakow and Wieliczka counties may use it, and it isn’t a bagel, different dough and boiling temperature.
Named picks by band
Budget: the milk bars above, plus Pierogi Mr Vincent. Mid-range: Miód Malina on ul. Grodzka, Restauracja Starka in Kazimierz (try the walnut cake), Chłopskie Jadło for gołąbki and beer-marinated sausage, and Restauracja pod Baranem for its roughly 20 PLN daily lunch special. Upscale: Bottiglieria 1881, Folga, Karakter, Kropka.
Markets and a proper vodka tasting
Stary Kleparz is the traditional market for oscypek (smoked sheep’s-milk cheese, best late spring through summer) and produce; Hala Targowa is the street-food version. Check current opening days for either on Krakow’s official tourism site before building a morning around them, market hours shift more often than restaurant hours. For vodka, go neat and ice-cold with pickles, herring, or smalec on the side, Żubrówka (bison grass, a blade of grass in every bottle) and Wyborowa (rye) are the two to try. Book a Krakow vodka tasting in a cellar setting if you want several styles paired with snacks rather than picking blind.
Tipping runs around 10% at sit-down restaurants now, genuinely expected rather than optional, 5-7% at cafés, 5-10% at bars, and Polish card terminals often skip the tip-prompt screen, so tell the server the amount before they run the card or tip in cash.
For the full trip plan, see the Krakow guide and things worth doing ; the Kazimierz-district context at Sztetl covers the Jewish heritage behind this neighbourhood’s food scene. Check rates in Krakow on Booking.com if you want to base yourself in Kazimierz for easy access to most of this list.
One concrete move: book a Bottiglieria 1881 table before you land if it’s on your list at all, it’s Poland’s only two-Michelin-star restaurant and the weekend tasting menu sells out well ahead of walk-up demand.
