Krakow Hikes Worth the Trip

Krakow itself has no real hiking terrain, the closest thing is a wooded hill on the city’s edge, and the actual mountain hiking is a two-hour bus ride away. Neither fact should stop you; both are genuinely worth doing, they just need honest expectations about distance.

Las Wolski, the closest real trail network
Las Wolski is a roughly 422-hectare protected forest west of the Old Town, eight marked trails totalling about 35km, and also home to Krakow Zoo. Two mounds sit in and around it: Piłsudski Mound, inside the forest proper, Krakow’s largest, free and unstaffed; and Kościuszko Mound nearby, paid at roughly 40-45 PLN with a small museum attached. Neither requires more than a tram or bus from the Old Town, no car needed for either.
Ojcowski National Park, Poland’s smallest, worth the half day
Ojcowski National Park, about 30 minutes out, is a limestone gorge carved by the Prądnik river, roughly 400 caves, and the “Trail of the Eagle’s Nests” castle-ruin chain. The ruined Gothic Ojców Castle and the intact, much-photographed Renaissance Pieskowa Skała Castle anchor either end of the trail system. The paths here are short and easy rather than strenuous, a genuine half-day outing rather than a full hiking day. Is Zakopane worth a day trip just for the hiking?
Yes, if you commit to the travel time honestly. Zakopane is roughly 104-110km south, 2-2.5 hours each way by bus, stretching to 3.5-4 hours on summer weekends, so treat it as a full day, or an overnight if your dates fall in a busy stretch.
Once there, Morskie Oko, Poland’s most-visited hike, a glacial lake at 1,395m, runs about 8km each way, mostly paved, roughly 2 hours on foot, from the Palenica Białczańska car park (paid, around 50 PLN/day, fills by 7-8am in season). The Kasprowy Wierch cable car climbs to a 1,987m summit in about 20 minutes and doubles as Tatra National Park entry that day, useful if you’d rather buy altitude than walk to it. Tatra NP entry itself runs 10 PLN/adult. Book a Zakopane hiking day trip if you’d rather not manage the bus and car-park timing yourself.
Getting to either without a car
Trams beat buses for crossing between the Old Town and Las Wolski’s edge, and the MPK city transit system covers both with a standard ticket, no separate fare needed. For Ojcowski, day-tour products bundling transport, guide, and castle entry run 4-7 hours and are the simplest way in without a rental car. Confirm current MPK fares and routes before you go; the tariff was restructured in March 2026 and older fare figures online are stale.
