Old Town gets recommended reflexively because it’s closest to Wawel and the Rynek, and that’s true, but you’re also paying Old-Town rates to sleep a few minutes from the square’s stag-do-heaviest bars. Kazimierz puts you nearly as close to the centre, inside the actual food and nightlife scene rather than the postcard version of it, usually for a comparable or lower price.

Old Town puts everything within reach, at a price
Old Town (Stare Miasto) is the obvious first-visit choice, Rynek Główny, Wawel, and St Mary’s Basilica all walkable, with everything from hostel dorms (roughly 80-100 PLN) to 5-star density (600-1,100-plus PLN). Named picks include Hotel Stary, Hotel Copernicus, Bonerowski Palace, Hotel Wentzl right on the Rynek, Polski Pod Białym Orłem opposite St Florian’s Gate, and the Sheraton Grand Kraków by the river. The catch: this is also the stag-do-heaviest part of the city at night, worth knowing if a quiet evening walk home matters to you.
Kazimierz, the food-and-nightlife base without the stag-do density
Kazimierz sits 15-20 minutes’ walk south of the Rynek, hip bars and food clustered around Plac Nowy and Szeroka Street, at similar or slightly below Old Town pricing, roughly 300-450 PLN mid-range. Its nightlife reads calmer and more local than the Old Town’s busiest strips, and it puts Bottiglieria 1881, Poland’s only two-Michelin-star restaurant, and the milk bars and zapiekanka stalls a short walk from your door. Podgórze, for a quieter, history-focused stay
Podgórze, across the Vistula from Kazimierz via the Bernatek footbridge, includes the former WWII ghetto area and Schindler’s Factory, quieter and more residential, with riverside design hotels at a relative discount to Old Town/Kazimierz pricing. The Hotel Qubus Kraków, riverside with a spa and pool, is a named option here. This is the pick for value plus quiet plus proximity to the Museum of Krakow’s Podgórze sites, not for late-night bar access.
Kleparz, for budget and the train
Kleparz sits just north of the Old Town beyond the Planty, near Kraków Główny station, a working local-market district roughly 10-15 minutes’ walk to the Rynek without Old Town’s premium attached. It’s the pick if an early train or a tight budget matters more than a Rynek-adjacent address.
Don’t default every trip to the Old Town
Steer by trip type rather than habit: Kazimierz for food and nightlife, Podgórze for value and quiet, Kleparz for budget and train access, Old Town only if walkability to Wawel outweighs the stag-do noise and the premium price. All four sit within Krakow’s compact, pedestrian-friendly core, and the MPK tram and bus network connects them cheaply if you end up staying in one and eating in another.
