Romantic Waitomo: Glowworm Boat Rides
A quiet getaway for two
Waitomo is a small cave village, not a resort. There are no luxury spas, wineries or resorts here. What it offers couples is darkness, glowworms and quiet cave boat rides. Plan one or two nights, and book cave slots ahead. Prices are in NZD, were read from operator pages in 2026, and change by season, so check the operator for current rates.
Glowworm boat rides
- Waitomo Glowworm Cave ends its 45-minute tour with a silent boat ride under the glowworms, from $85 per adult. Photography and filming are not allowed, so you watch rather than shoot.
- Spellbound takes up to 12 people on a 150-minute tour of two caves, with a 20-minute flat-water boat ride. It costs $109 per adult, meets at 334 Boddies Road, Oparure, about 15 km from the village, and allows cameras.
Private and small tours
- Glowing Adventures offers private tours at $1,199 per group of 1 to 8 on its own land, including a wild cave. It trades as Down to Earth Waitomo, at 1199 Oparure Road, Te Kuiti. The shared Off the Beaten Track tour costs $219 per person for ages 12 and over.
- Caveworld at 23 Waitomo Village Road runs the Footwhistle tour in about 75 minutes, with solar-powered LED lights that go off at the river so the glowworms show. Ask about a private departure.
Evening and outdoors
The Ruakuri Walk, about 4 km from the village, shows glowworms at night, best beside the main bridge. Bring a torch, because there are many steep, slippery stairs.
Kawhia Ocean Beach, over an hour away, has a hot water beach. Dig a pool in the sand within about 2 hours either side of low tide and bring a spade.
Where to eat and stay
HuHu Cafe has a deck in the village, so check its opening hours before you plan dinner around it. Waitomo Caves Guest Lodge is a bed and breakfast with an official website. Waitomo Top 10 Holiday Park is about 600 m from the Glowworm Cave.
Tips for couples
- Check in 30 minutes before a cave tour.
- Caves and tours can close in floods, so check operator notices before you travel.
- Book a cave slot for late in the day if you want a long, unhurried dinner afterwards.
- Fill up with fuel before leaving Otorohanga, Piopio or Te Kuiti, since there is none west of Waitomo.
- Stay on marked tracks near caves, because hidden vertical shafts are common on this limestone farmland.
