Waitomo Two-Day Itinerary and Stays
How long to stay in Waitomo
Waitomo is a village, not a region of multi-day circuits, so a trip here is one night, perhaps two. The shape is a few cave bookings, one drive along Te Anga Road and a stop at Otorohanga on the way out. Prices are in NZD, were read from operator pages in 2026, and change by season, so check the operator for current rates.
Day 1: village and caves
- Start at the Waitomo Caves Museum at 21 Waitomo Village Road. Entry is $10 for adults and $7 for seniors, and children 4 to 14 are free with a paying adult.
- Take the Waitomo Glowworm Cave tour, from $85 adult and $39 child. It lasts 45 minutes and ends with a silent boat ride. Photography is not allowed.
- In the afternoon, choose an adventure. Black Labyrinth is 3 hours of cave tubing from $199, for ages 12 and over. The Lost World Half Day is 4 to 5 hours, for ages 10 and over, from about $650 to $700.
- Eat in the village. The HuHu Cafe has a deck, so check its opening hours. There is also a small general store.
- After dark, walk the Ruakuri Walk to see glowworms beside the main bridge. Bring a torch, because the track has many stairs and can be steep and slippery.
Day 2: Ruakuri, Te Anga Road and the Kiwi House
- Take the Ruakuri Cave tour, from $122 adult and $46 child, and allow 2 hours. Or book Spellbound, a 150-minute small-group tour from $109 adult and $38 child that meets at 334 Boddies Road, Oparure.
- Drive west on Te Anga Road to Piripiri Cave (free, a 5-minute walk and steps, bring a torch) and Marokopa Falls, a 35 m waterfall on a short easy track. Visit Mangapohue Natural Bridge only after checking the DOC page for its current status.
- Fill the tank before you go, because there is no fuel west of Waitomo, and Otorohanga, Piopio or Te Kuiti are the places to fill up.
- On the way out, stop at Otorohanga Kiwi House, open 9am to 5pm daily, with keeper talks at 10:30am and 1:30pm.
Where to stay
- Waitomo Caves Guest Lodge is a bed and breakfast with an official website for bookings.
- Waitomo Top 10 Holiday Park is at 12 Waitomo Caves Road, about 600 m from the Glowworm Cave.
Cave slots fill in peak season, so book your cave tours and your bed together. Check in 30 minutes before each cave tour.
Rainy days and flooding
Caves are a good wet-weather option, but tours can be cancelled in flooding. The district had a major flood in October 2025 that cut roads between Waitomo and Marokopa, so check operator and council notices before a Te Anga Road drive.
Adding more days
A third day is better spent in Waitomo District itself than on a long drive. Kawhia Ocean Beach has a hot water beach that you dig into within about 2 hours either side of low tide, and it is over an hour from the village.
