Bulgaria Multi-Day Routes: 4 to 7 Days
The loop that works
The most practical multi-day route in Bulgaria is a mountain-and-old-town loop through the southwest. Four or five days covers Sofia, Rila Monastery, the Seven Rila Lakes, Bansko and Plovdiv. Add Veliko Tarnovo for six or seven days, and treat the Black Sea as a separate coastal extension rather than another stop on the loop.
Day by day
Day 1, Sofia. Use the capital to land, sort your rental car and see the main sights on foot.
Day 2, Rila Monastery. Drive about 117 km south, roughly two to two and a half hours. The courtyard and church are free, the museum costs extra and modest dress is expected. There is no reliable public bus, which is why the monastery’s access page points to cars and tours.
Day 3, Seven Rila Lakes. About 90 km from Sofia to the Panichishte lift station. The chairlift is €16 return and €11 one-way. Lifts have maintenance breaks and the hiking season runs late June to September, so check the lift page for dates.
Day 4, Bansko. Head through the Struma valley to the foot of the Pirin range. In winter a day lift pass is €59 at peak and €45 off-peak, and in summer the town is a hiking base.
Day 5, Plovdiv. Wander the old town, whose streets are free to walk. The Kapana quarter is the place for an evening drink. To finish with the capital, the coaches back to Sofia take roughly 1 hour 40 to 2 hours 20.
Days 6 and 7, Veliko Tarnovo. About three hours from Sofia by road. Tsarevets fortress tickets are roughly €5 to €8, and the evening sound-and-light show is priced separately.
Moving between stops
By train, BDZ runs Sofia to Plovdiv in about two and a half hours at about €5 to €8, which is the cheapest leg in the country. Elsewhere, a car makes the loop far easier. The national roads need an e-vignette, priced €10 for a week, and the official vignette site sells it online. Rental firms may already have activated one, so ask at pickup. For hotels along the way, you can compare Bansko stays on Booking.com .
Seasonal tweaks
- Late June to September: the whole loop works, and lake hiking is open.
- Winter: swap the lakes day for skiing in Bansko, and expect snow on the Rila road.
- Autumn: lifts may be in maintenance, so keep a plan B of museum days.
You can compare this with the four-day Bulgaria plan if you only have a long weekend.
Verdict: five days is the sweet spot. Skip the coast on this loop and give each mountain stop a full morning. Book hotels in Bansko early for peak ski weeks.
