Dresden with Kids: Zoo, Trains and Museums
Dresden works well for a family trip because several of its best child-friendly stops are compact and inside the city. This page lists the ones with confirmed details, plus the ticket rules that save money. Prices are in euros and can change, so check each site before you go.
Dresdner Parkeisenbahn
The Parkeisenbahn in the Großer Garten is a 15-inch gauge railway (381 mm) that runs 5.6 km with five stations. It is staffed largely by children and young volunteers, which is a big part of the appeal for school-age kids. Stations include Palaisteich, Zoo and Straßburger Platz. The operator is Staatliche Schlösser, Burgen und Gärten Sachsen. The railway runs as a seasonal service from spring to the end of October and is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays in season. It does not run in winter, so plan around the dates. Adult single fares are about 5 EUR for the first three stations and about 8 EUR for the longer ride, with reduced fares a few euros lower. See parkeisenbahn-dresden.de for the current timetable.
Deutsches Hygiene-Museum
The Hygiene-Museum at Lingnerplatz 1 charges 12 EUR for adults and 6 EUR reduced, and children under 17 go in free. It is open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 17:00 and closed on Mondays. Its Kinder-Museum is built around the senses.
Zoo Dresden
Zoo Dresden at Tiergartenstraße 1 was founded in 1861. An adult ticket is 19 EUR and a child ticket 10 EUR. The Orang-Utan-Haus opened in 2024, and the zoo keeps red pandas, but it has no giant pandas. Opening hours change by season, so check zoo-dresden.de on the day.
Verkehrsmuseum Dresden
The Verkehrsmuseum in the Johanneum on Augustusstraße 1 is open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00. While the foyer is being renovated, visitors use the rear entrance. An adult ticket costs about 12 EUR.
Panometer
The Panometer in Reick shows a 360 degree panorama of the Great Barrier Reef in a former gasometer. Children aged 6 to 16 pay about 8 EUR and adults about 16 EUR. It is open until 17:00 on weekdays and 18:00 on weekends.
Museum tickets for families
Since 1 April 2026, children up to school age are free at the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (SKD) museums, and pupils pay 2 EUR per visit. The old rule of free entry under 17 no longer applies at the SKD. The Hygiene-Museum is the exception, because it still admits under-17s free. SKD also runs a Sunday scheme with one museum free from 15:00; ask or check skd.museum for the current rota.
Getting around with children
The family day ticket on DVB trams and buses costs 14.40 EUR for 2 adults and up to 4 school children. A single ticket costs 3.60 EUR, with a reduced single at 2.20 EUR. The Loschwitz cable cars have separate tickets; a family single is about 12 EUR.
A winter stage show, “3 Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel”, runs at Schloss Moritzburg from late November, sold online only. For more on that trip, read more: day trips from Dresden .
Tips
- The Frauenkirche dome has stairs and a ramp but no lift, so it is not suitable for strollers.
- Compare child-friendly tours on Viator if you want a guided option.
- Pair one indoor stop with one outdoor stop in a day; the Parkeisenbahn has a station named Zoo.
