Dresden Multi-Day Trips: A 3 to 5 Day Base
Dresden has no multi-day tours, cruise packages or long trekking routes of its own. What works is a base-and-radiate trip: sleep in the city for three to five nights and spend the days on the Altstadt, the Neustadt and day trips along the Elbe. This page gives a simple outline. For hour-by-hour plans, use the 3 day itinerary or the 5 day itinerary .
Day 1: Altstadt
Start on the south bank, where the rebuilt Baroque centre is compact. See the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger and the Residenzschloss, then finish at the Semperoper. Mind the closing days: the Zwinger is closed on Mondays and the Residenzschloss on Tuesdays. The Historic Green Vault is a timed ticket (18 EUR, 13.50 EUR reduced) bought separately, so book it before you travel.
Day 2: Neustadt and the Elbe
Cross to the north bank for the Äußere Neustadt and the courtyards of the Kunsthofpassage. In the afternoon, ride the Loschwitz cable cars, or take a paddle steamer if the Elbe is high enough for the boats to run. The cable cars close for maintenance in some autumn weeks, and the steamers depend on water level, so keep this day flexible.
Day 3: Saxon Switzerland
Take the S1 to Kurort Rathen for the Bastei Bridge, or on to Königstein for the fortress. Check trail closures on saechsische-schweiz.de first, because storm damage in 2026 shut several paths. The rock castle at the Bastei is closed.
Day 4: Meissen and Moritzburg
Meissen is about 38 minutes by S1, and Moritzburg is reached by the S1 to Radebeul Ost and the Lößnitzgrundbahn railway. Together they fill a long day, but Schloss Moritzburg closes for a stretch of November, and the Albrechtsburg in Meissen is closed on Tuesdays. Pick one if you are short of time.
Day 5: Museums and the rest
Use a fifth day for what you missed: the Albertinum (14 EUR, 10.50 EUR reduced), the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum (12 EUR, free under 17), or the Panometer. In summer you can add Pillnitz, where the park and Schlossmuseum are open from late March to early November.
Tickets that help over several days
- SKD 1-day ticket: 28 EUR; 2-day ticket: 32 EUR. They cover all SKD museums except the Historic Green Vault and timed special exhibitions.
- MuseumsCard Dresden: two days, about 27 museums, no transport, and it excludes the Historic Green Vault. It costs about 35 EUR, so compare it with the SKD pass.
- Dresden City Card: local transport plus discounts, with no free museum entry.
- Day ticket on trams and buses: 9.50 EUR; a Deutschlandticket costs 63 EUR a month.
Seasonal variations
The Striezelmarkt on the Altmarkt runs from late November to Christmas Eve, is free to enter and suits a winter version of this trip. If your trip covers mid-February, note that the city remembers the bombing of 13 to 15 February 1945. Demonstrations around 13 February do not affect normal visits, but treat the date with respect.
Where to stay
