Day Trips from Dresden: Bastei and Meissen
Dresden is a good base for day trips because the S1 S-Bahn runs along the Elbe to Saxon Switzerland in one direction and to Meissen in the other. Most trips take under an hour each way. Fares and hours below are in euros and can change, so confirm them on the official sites.
Saxon Switzerland and the Bastei
The Bastei is a sandstone viewpoint above the Elbe with a bridge built in 1851 that is 76.5 metres long. Walking across is free and the bridge is always open. A newer viewing platform, the Basteiaussicht, opened in 2023 and is barrier-free.
Getting there: take the S1 to Kurort Rathen (about 35 minutes), cross the Elbe on the Rathen ferry, then follow the Basteiweg uphill. The ferry costs 1.50 EUR single or 3.00 EUR return for an adult (children 6 to 16 pay 1.00 and 2.00). VVO tickets, the Gästekarte mobil and the Deutschlandticket are not accepted on the ferry, so buy a separate ticket. Bus lines 237, 239 and 254 also serve the Bastei.
Read the trail notices before you go. The rock castle next to the bridge, Felsenburg Neurathen, is closed, so there is no entry to it. After a storm at the end of July 2026 several trails closed, and the Schindergraben in the Polenztal and parts of Malerweg stages 3 and 5 stayed closed in autumn. Check saechsische-schweiz.de for the latest. Wear boots, because sandstone steps are slippery when wet. Drones are banned in the national park, and climbing follows the Saxon Climbing Rules (no chalk, no climbing on wet rock).
Festung Königstein
The Königstein fortress is reached by the S1 to Königstein. It opens 09:00 to 17:00 from November to March. In high season an adult ticket is about 17 EUR, and the fortress site lists the current prices.
Meissen
Meissen is about 38 minutes from Dresden on the S1. The Erlebniswelt MEISSEN porcelain attraction at Talstraße 9 is open daily 09:00 to 17:00 and charges 15 EUR online or 16 EUR on site. Youth tickets (6 to 18) cost 12 EUR and the family ticket is 30 EUR. The Albrechtsburg castle on Domplatz is closed on Tuesdays; adults pay 12 EUR, and a combined ticket with the porcelain manufactory costs 24 EUR and stays valid for three days. See Erlebniswelt MEISSEN for current hours.
Schloss Moritzburg
Entry to Schloss Moritzburg costs 12 EUR for adults and includes a HistoPad guide. It is open until the start of November, closes for part of that month, and reopens with shorter winter hours and a winter stage show, sold online only. The official route is the S1 to Radebeul Ost, then the Lößnitzgrundbahn narrow-gauge steam railway to Moritzburg (6.60 EUR one way, 13.00 EUR return). VVO tickets are not valid on that railway. Bus connections exist; check vvo-online.de rather than relying on a direct bus. See Schloss Moritzburg for dates.
Pillnitz by river
The paddle steamer to Pillnitz runs only when the Elbe is high enough. The park and Schlossmuseum are open from late March to early November, and an adult ticket costs about 8 EUR. The applied-arts museum there is closed in 2026.
Longer trips
Leipzig (about 65 to 90 minutes) and Prague (about 2 hours) are separate days, not casual add-ons. To compare organised options, see Dresden day trips on Viator . For more ideas, read more: Dresden sightseeing .
