Dresden Activities: Steamers and Cable Cars
Dresden is the capital of Saxony, built along a wide, flat stretch of the Elbe. The famous Baroque core gets most of the attention, but the city also has rides, courtyards and shows that make a good change from museum queues. This page covers the activities that work as an outing in themselves. Prices are in euros and can change, so check the operator before you go.
Elbe paddle steamers
The Sächsische Dampfschifffahrt runs historic paddle steamers from the Terrassenufer, where piers 1 to 5 sit along the Altstadt bank. Tickets are sold at Pier 2. Two trips suit visitors who want a river view of the skyline:
- The Historische Stadtfahrt (line 72) takes about 1 h 30.
- The Schlösserfahrt (line 61) runs to Pillnitz and back in about 3 h 15.
Line trips for adults cost 16, 21, 28 or 31 EUR depending on how many tariff zones you cross, and the return leg is 11 EUR. For the shortest trip, think from about 16 EUR. The steamers only run when the Elbe is high enough, so low water can cut the timetable to a few city trips or stop it. Look at the operator’s live departure board the day before. The operator also lists evening cruises with live Dixie swing and family rides in autumn; dates change by season. See the Sächsische Dampfschifffahrt timetable for current sailings.
Loschwitz cable cars
Two historic cable railways climb the hill above the Elbe at Loschwitz: the Standseilbahn (funicular, 1895) and the Schwebebahn (suspension railway, 1901). They have their own ticket, which is not covered by the day ticket or the Deutschlandticket. Expect about 5 EUR for a single and about 7 EUR up and down on the same day. The DVB page lists yearly revision closures, which fell in November in 2026, so check the DVB cable car page first.
Kunsthofpassage
In the Äußere Neustadt at Görlitzer Straße 21 to 25, the Kunsthofpassage links five themed courtyards: Hof der Fabelwesen, Hof der Tiere, Hof der Metamorphosen, Hof des Lichts and Hof der Elemente. The music-playing drainpipe, the Trichterwand, is in the Hof der Elemente. Walking through is free.
Yadegar Asisi Panometer
The Panometer at Gasanstaltstraße 8b in Reick shows a 360 degree panorama inside a former gasometer. The current show is Great Barrier Reef. Opening hours run 10:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday and 10:00 to 18:00 on weekends and holidays. Adult tickets cost about 16 EUR, with lower prices for children and reduced tickets. Check panometer-dresden.de for the current show and prices.
Semperoper
Seeing a performance at the Semperoper on Theaterplatz is an activity in its own right. The season and tickets are on semperoper.de, and prices vary a lot by seat and production.
Getting around
A single tram or bus ticket in the Dresden zone costs 3.60 EUR and is valid for one hour. A day ticket is 9.50 EUR. The Dresden City Card bundles local transport with discounts but does not include free museum entry. For the cable cars you still need a separate ticket.

Practical tips
- Pickpockets work crowded areas such as the Frauenkirche square and trams, so keep bags closed.
- On a wet day, the Panometer is an indoor choice, while the steamers and courtyards suit dry weather.
- Tram lines 3 and 7 were diverted after the Carolabrücke was demolished, so check dvb.de before relying on an old route map.
