Dresden Walking Routes: Altstadt, Neustadt
Dresden is easy to explore on foot. The two main areas, the Altstadt on the south bank and the Neustadt on the north bank, are flat, and each makes a half-day loop. These routes are self-guided, so you can start and stop wherever you like. Prices are in euros, and hours can change.
Altstadt circuit, about 2.5 km
Start at the Neumarkt in front of the Frauenkirche. Walk down to Brühl’s Terrace, the riverside promenade, then continue to Schlossplatz and the Katholische Hofkirche. Turn into Augustusstraße to see the Fürstenzug, the 102 m tile mural of Saxon rulers, then reach Theaterplatz and the Semperoper. Finish at the Zwinger, whose courtyard, Kronentor and Nymphenbad can be entered for free. The whole loop is flat.
Neustadt circuit, about 3.5 km
Cross the Augustusbrücke to the north bank and find the Goldener Reiter on the Neustädter Markt. Follow Hauptstraße north into the Äußere Neustadt, where the Kunsthofpassage at Görlitzer Straße 21 to 25 links five themed courtyards. Among them, the Hof der Elemente has the music-playing drainpipe. Nearby, Pfunds Molkerei at Bautzner Straße 79 is a shop from the 1880s lined with hand-painted tiles. You can look inside for free. Opening hours vary through the year, so check pfunds.de before you go.
Elbe promenade
The Terrassenufer promenade below Brühl’s Terrace reopened on 17 September 2025 after the Carolabrücke was taken down. It is a flat riverside walk past the paddle steamer piers, and it is free. The bridge has been demolished and its replacement is planned for around 2030, so do not plan a route that crosses at that point. Trams 3 and 7 are diverted, so check dvb.de before using them to link walks.
Memorial visits
These are separate, solemn visits. They are not part of a casual loop, and each deserves its own time.
- Heidefriedhof, Ehrenhain. The memorial grove for victims of the February 1945 bombing is at Moritzburger Landstraße 299. It is open 07:00 to 20:00 from April to October and 07:00 to 18:00 from November to March.
- DenkRaum Sophienkirche. This memorial on Sophienstraße near Postplatz recalls the Sophienkirche, which the East German authorities demolished in 1962 to 1963. It reopened under this name in November 2025. Confirm hours on its own site.
- Gedenkstätte Münchner Platz. A former court building, now part of the Technical University, where about 1,330 people were executed in the Nazi period, 824 of them Czech, and 83 more in the Soviet and East German periods. It is run by the Stiftung Sächsische Gedenkstätten; check the foundation’s page for hours.
- Gedenkstätte Bautzner Straße. The former Stasi detention site at Bautzner Straße 112a charges 8 EUR (5 EUR reduced). Details are on stasihaft-dresden.de .
